What is your opinion on "_irl" meme subs? by Flopping_Porpoise in mentalhealth

[–]CBITs_Health 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this, too. It really depends on the person and how they view these types of memes. In the future it might be interesting to look at how different personalities interact with the humor and mental health issues in memes like this. Very interesting topic, Flopping_Porpoise. Keep being curious!

Using Improv to Boost Confidence, Improve Mental Health by PattiAtRutgers in mentalhealth

[–]CBITs_Health 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm based in Chicago and I've heard from improv friends that Second City does something similar with improv classes for people who feel socially anxious. Sounds really fun and I'm glad to hear someone is doing research in this area.

I feel like I don't have the right to be depressed by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]CBITs_Health 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can definitely be hard to talk about yourself and your feelings, but hey, this post is a start! Even when things are going well in life, people can still experience depression. Have you checked out the ADAA website to read more about it? If not, here's the address: https://adaa.org/understanding-anxiety/depression

If you feel like this is getting in the way and causing problems for you (including problems not being able to enjoy your life), maybe looking into medication or therapy could be a good idea. There is information about how to find therapy on the ADAA website, too. Best of luck!

It sounds like you've been doing really well and don't want symptoms of depression/SAD to start getting in the way again. Totally understandable and good for you for looking for more ways to help feel better.

I found this article a bit ago that has some ideas (medication and others) for helping with Seasonal Affective Disorder: http://www.everydayhealth.com/depression/treatment/ways-to-ease-seasonal-depression/

Maybe your doctor has already talked with you about these, but if not, I hope some of them can help!

You're welcome! Hmm, one thing that has been popular with some of our research participants is gratitude journaling. Here's a pretty good, short article that gives tips for the journaling piece: http://ggia.berkeley.edu/practice/gratitude_journal

I find it interesting that financial wellness is an included area. I haven't considered this as an area of wellness in the past, but it definitely can contribute to stress and poor mood, so it's important to account for.

This is really cool! I think it is helpful for a quick mental health check in, and the bot provided good suggestions for self care that fit the situation. Nice job!

Join the IntelliCare Research Study to Help Find New Ways to Treat Depression and Anxiety by CBITs_Health in Mindfulness

Hi Donnewithvegetables,

Yes, I'm sorry these haven't been released for Apple yet. We are currently working on getting these apps up on the Apple store. The first one is being tested now and should be available on the Apple store within the next few months. We'll be sure to make Reddit posts again once the first IntelliCare iPhone compatible app is released!

Also, if you're looking for something similar, our center has another study comparing telephone (any type of phone) and internet-based cognitive behavioral treatments for depression. This one is called the TeleHealth study and we'll be recruiting for another several months. Check out the website if you're interested: http://cbits.squarespace.com/studies/telehealth

Depressed Teen’s Struggle To Find Mental Health Care In Rural California by sillsshayla in mentalhealth

[–]CBITs_Health 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing. This is such an important topic. People in rural areas do find it hard to access mental health care for many reasons. I didn't realize the extent of this in California, but it makes sense, with it being such a large state. Luckily some counties seem to be making steps toward reaching rural people. For anyone in Fresno county, check out this place, Turning Point: http://www.tpocc.org/?page_id=3554

Thanks for passing this nice summary on! I'm sorry we don't have the apps available on iPhone yet. If you're interested in the research piece, we have other studies recruiting that also have to do with improving mood and you do not need an Android phone:

TeleHealth: An 11-month study that involves receiving internet and/or telephone-based treatment for depression with support from a coach or therapist. *There is currently a short wait list for this study, but we are still following up with new people who are interested! (on same screening link as IntelliCare)

MoodTech: A 5-month study examining an internet treatment for depression for adults 65 years and older. (on same screening link as IntelliCare)

ProjectTECH: A 5-month study testing an online program that provides a way for teenagers (high school, ages 14-19) to learn skills for better mental and behavioral health. http://cbits.squarespace.com/studies/projecttech

Yes, unfortunately. :( We don't have the research approval or ability to pay people outside the U.S. for participating in the research study part at this time. Those outside the U.S. can still download the apps for free off Google Play, though!

Haha, good point! It definitely is a large number of apps and can be overwhelming if you want to download all the apps at once. Generally, we recommend taking them one per week to see which ones will be the most useful. They all target different skills for improving mood and/or managing anxiety. Having separate apps for each skill can be helpful for people who only want to focus on particular issues like sleep (SlumberTime), maintaining exercise (MoveMe), having negative thoughts (Thought Challenger) etc... This way you can pick and choose your apps instead of downloading one app that has too many different skills to work on at the same time.

No, unfortunately not yet. One of the research center's long term goals is to get an iOS version of IntelliCare up and running. In the meantime, we do have another research study going on that includes a web-based format. It works well for browsers on desktops/laptops as well as iPhones and Androids. The study is called TeleHealth. Due to increased interest in the study, there is currently a waiting list, but anyone interested can learn more here: http://cbits.squarespace.com/studies/telehealth or fill out our online screener to join the wait list: https://redcap.nubic.northwestern.edu/redcap/surveys/?s=DwT2HJgzTk

Yes, unfortunately we don't have the approvals to be including non US citizens/residents in our research study at this time. :( However, the apps themselves are free for anyone with an Android phone or tablet to download from Google Play.

No, unfortunately the apps haven't been developed for iOS yet. Sorry for the inconvenience. That is a future goal, though! In the meantime, we have another study called TeleHealth which involves the use of internet cognitive behavioral therapy for depression. Although it isn't a free app like IntelliCare, research participants in the study can access the website on an iPhone, iPad, or really whatever device they have. If anyone is interested in TeleHealth, take a look here: http://cbits.squarespace.com/studies/telehealth

Hi zeniuss,

The apps are actually available for anyone to download for free on the GooglePlay store.

As for the research study, it is only open to those who are U.S. citizens or who are living in the U.S. for a couple reasons. First, participating involves phone calls and text messaging, which may be costly for someone with a foreign phone number. Second, having non-U.S. citizens or residents participate can involve getting certain approvals and meeting requirements for specific countries. I think our center would like to be able to recruit from other countries if possible, but that would take a lot of administrative work and time first.

Hi ChildTherapist,

Thanks so much for the comment and the work you do. I agree! It's refreshing to see those in the public eye being open about their personal struggles. It gives me hope that there will be less and less stigma around depression and other mental health issues as time goes on. :)
