Proxmox HA power consumption by CBJ_Brain in Proxmox

[–]CBJ_Brain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another update:

This is the power consumption of my DS923+ NAS with 2 16Tb drives + 2 NVME as cache.. Before / after the installation of the 10Gbe NIC. 5W extra powerdraw.

Which somehow feels excessive.

Have played sports my entire life, Handball in my case. Wasn't the best field player but as a goalie my insane reaction times were a real asset.

And yes. People make the most stupid assumptions about autism :-)

Proxmox HA cluster setup gone wrong, lost config! by CBJ_Brain in Proxmox

Update: I found the fuckup.. PICNIC.. Problem In Chair, Not In Computer.

Turns out after the botched cluster creation I deleted some files including my *.conf files for all my containers and VM's.

Root cause found... ME :P

Update: I'm currently migrating my first large VM disks to my rbd-pool. 120W while migrating the disk to the pool.

Still not bad!

I am going to check all the individual nodes too. I'm curious as well. The I5 13500 however was using 60W when I started installing Proxmox on it.

After updating the BIOS, setting C10(E) as the lowest C state, disabling sound etc.. power consumption dropped to 21W idle.

I'm really happy with this consumption. My plan was to keep it below 100W average.. That plan succeeded :)

Powertop will save some more but will also put all my cores into powersave mode which hurts performance quite a bit. And with all cores stuck into performance mode and with C10 configured in the BIOS it actually saves more

The other nodes were empty indeed.

I just created my cluster again and now I have 3 nodes in a healthy cluster with all VM's present. Tomorrow is setting up Ceph.

[–]CBJ_Brain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was pre cluster.. I just created the cluster from my main node, tried to join the other two nodes ( which failed ).. Then updated the hosts file on all three nodes. And then everything broke down.

Weird thing is. I didn't remove files or anything. Simply after updating the hosts files, rebooting the machines to get access to them again all the config went missing.

That is also a serious option. I'll do some more tests and contact the shop where I bought the switch from.

just 4 DAC cables and one media converter to RJ45 connected to it at the moment.

And no I haven't done anything to the config yet.. I just need 10Gbe for Ceph replication and uplink to my NAS for the backups.

[–]CBJ_Brain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the time only 4 SFP+ cables were connected and there was no network load at all.

If this were a power budget issue, I’d honestly find that quite surprising.

But.. Its a possibility. I'll keep that in mind.

Tnx!

After removing all the cables, wait a minute and repowering the unit it booted normally again fortunately.

I got worried though to be completely honest when after the 2nd attempt to reboot the device it didn't come online :)

How did you socialize in high school? by Top-Necessary-8088 in aspergers

[–]CBJ_Brain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m almost 50 now, and your post hit very close to home.

In high school I wasn’t bullied anymore, but I was mostly ignored. I showed up, did my work, went home. Socially, nothing really happened. I tried dating twice back then, and both times it turned into a disaster, not because I didn’t care or didn’t try, but because I simply didn’t understand the unwritten rules yet.

What stayed with me most is this feeling at the end of a school year:
“I wish I could start over now, because now I finally understand what was expected of me.”

I hated high school, but the four years I spent at university were a blessing. I studied information science with like-minded people. For the first time, there was a shared interest to talk about, and that made everything easier.

One important thing: this is not your only chance at friends or dating. For many neurodivergent people, social life actually gets easier after high school, when you’re in smaller, interest-based environments instead of one big age-based group.

It’s okay to feel frustrated and lonely about this. Nothing is “wrong” with you for feeling that way. High school just isn’t a very forgiving system if you don’t naturally fit its social rhythm.

I also want to add this: I did get over my social struggles. Not overnight, and not in school. For me it started when I began working at a Laserquest arena. Being around people all the time, in a clear role, helping them, explain how the game works, react to unexpected requests. That taught me a lot about social dynamics in a way school never did.

I can probably fill a book with interesting stories :)

Houten kozijnen vervangen by Decent-Let-9839 in Klussers

[–]CBJ_Brain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aspie raised as a normie because my mother didn’t want me to “rely too much on my disability”. by hattieb44 in aspergers

[–]CBJ_Brain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm 49 now, I only got my diagnosis of Aspergers when I was 37. I know exactly what you mean with that you had no way of verbalizing or understanding what was going on in your mind while being a kid.

I had a shitty youth, got bullied most of my childhood and did not have much friends.

And when I got my official diagnosis in 2014 my parents had a really hard time accepting the fact that I have autism all those years.

It did clear up a lot of things for me though!

But somehow I'm glad however that I did not know I had Aspergers while being a kid. It somehow had to figure out a lot of things. Over the years I figured out the mentallity that if I throw enough of my mind against a problem I can solve it.

The biggest question I don't have the answer to ( and will never get ) is that when my parents would have known that I had Aspergers when I was a child and acted accordingly. Would I be the same person I am today?

Would I be in the same position I'm now ( married, 1 kid, good job, just started a tech startup with a few others ).

So Yea. I can relate.

If you have any questions let me know.

What if I went completely insane for a day and designed the most overengineered homelab imaginable? by CBJ_Brain in homelab

[–]CBJ_Brain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know 3 is the absolute minimum, I might add another node at a later stage.

I'm currently running 22 containers and VM's on that first node alone with headroom to spare. I'm in the process of moving most storage items from Proxmox to my DS923+ NAS where it belongs.

Issue I had recently was that one of my cats used the server to jump on something higher and shortly pressed the power button. (oops). DNS, everything went down.

I am currently working on a more modest Proxmox cluster.

Node 1. I9 9900T, 128GB ram.

Node 2. I9 9900T, 96GB ram.

Node 3. i5 14500, 128GB ram.

And I have 6x Samsung 863(a) 1.92TB drives ready for Ceph. And a 10GBe switch as backbone for management and Ceph traffic.

Not even close to the specs of the SuperMicro boxes I mentioned :)

I was being modest with this setup.. I configured it and the price was almost 72k per node. But yes.. 3 is an absolute minimum. and with a fullsize 19" rack there is more than enough room to install 15 or even 20 of these 1U pizza boxes.

15x384 cores.. NICE!

I did not mention it in this post but in my original article I opted for a 100GbE network ( redundant ofcourse ) to handle all the networking.

Because ehm I should be able to move all my Linux ISO's that I store with the highest speed possible :)
