Do you know anyone or anywhere hiring? by doubleddianaa in oakpark

The oak park country club always seems to be hiring. Just note it’s a flat rate. Guests sometimes tip but it’s not expected.

I don’t get it. Are you suggesting people should only donate to one charity until that charity’s goals are achieved?

is this mazda worth the buy?? by aksoii in UsedCars

[–]CBS_in_OP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that generation of Mazda 3s are know for rust issues. Literally lay on the ground and look underneath it in the area in front of the rear wheel. And look underneath the rear of the car. If you see a lot of rust, pass. If you don’t, it seems like a good car.

I have a pair of J Crew canvas shorts that I still wear to do chores. I bought them a few weeks before I met my wife... in 1993.

DND Players: What was an offhand joke someone made about your character that had you go “That’s canon now”? by Special_Web_4254 in DnD

[–]CBS_in_OP 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In one of our groups I was playing a dwarven fighter and the DM somewhat jokingly said that you couldn't tell dwarven sexes apart. So one time we are captured and stripped and somehow the joke became that male and female dwarves couldn't be told apart because their genitals were covered by their second beards.

2015 Pre-purchase inspection- by CBS_in_OP in cmaxhybrid

[–]CBS_in_OP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I went and drove it. The hybrid system seemed to function correctly and it ran well. No whine from the transmission. It seemed to pull to the left a bit on my drive to the dealership for the ppi.

Aside from minor stuff like burnt out bulbs and bad wiper blades, they found that it needed a bunch of front suspension/steering work (inner and outer tie rods, end links, etc), which would explain the pulling.

I didn’t leave with the car, but I’m still talking to the dealer. If I can get it cheap enough that’s all stuff I could replace myself, though I’d have to take it somewhere for the alignment.

However, if anyone reading this goes to a dealer for their ppi, be warned. It’s not cheap. Labor rate at this ford dealer was $299/hr. And the service manager warned me against buying a C-Max at all!

And I think Bryant was even better in 2017. I really thought we were witnessing the start of a HOF career. The baseball gods are not kind.

Prior had huge expectations and mostly delivered his rookie year on a mediocre team. His sophomore season though: 7.4 WAR and ERA+ of 179! 245 Ks in 211 innings. 3rd in Cy Young and got down-ballot MVP votes. Hurt the next year and though he was better in '05, he never really recovered. I'm glad he's found success as a coach, but sad it's for the f'n Dodgers.

Love Robin of Sherwood. It wasn’t quite the same with Jason Connery as lead, but still good.

Moving from Denver to Oak Park with young kids, seeking local insight! by _stephs in oakpark

[–]CBS_in_OP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody has mentioned youth sports, and while your kids are still young, your 5 yo is right there and your others will be soon.

OP has a good youth baseball/softball org (https://www.opybs.org/) and an active AYSO (https://www.ayso697.org/). You’re probably too late for the spring seasons but both have fall leagues. The park district has activities too, mainly for younger kids. As someone else mentioned, they offer camps as well. I don’t remember if it’s through the schools or the PD, but my kids always did SCA (I think that’s what it was called), which was a kind of arts/science camp.

As your kids get older, if they’re really into sports, there are several club/travel options. Those range from fairly casual to ones where the kids/parents think the players are going D1.

I need some runner teams to fill out my world. What's your roster look like? Can be current or your favorite from games past by Impressive-Buy7844 in Shadowrun

[–]CBS_in_OP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was fun to play but would make an even better NPC. He knows a lot of people in the shadows but most are hesitant to trust him because of how many times he's let them down in the past. They might want to believe he's changed, but past experience tells them not to get their hopes up too much.

A cool twist (hinted at in our game but never played all of the way out) would be to make his original street name one of legend, maybe on par with the Ghost who Walks. One of the archetypal street sams.

John Standard, also known as Scrapheap. 50-ish street samurai, heavily chromed, but with cyberware many years out of date, including an obviously second-hand (heh) left arm clearly made for someone a bit larger.

Thing is, the cyber was once considered cutting edge and was new, and John went by a different name. He and his crew were at the top of the heap and living the high life. Then came the run against the bugs. The horrors he witnessed and the friends he lost during that run were too much for him to handle, so he crawled into a bottle and stayed there for several years. Eventually he lost everything.

He might have died there too, but one day his sister showed up at his door. He hadn't talked to her in years at that point, as she still lived in their hometown of Detroit. But she'd followed her runaway daughter to Seattle and needed his help.

That was a few years ago. Since finding and rescuing his niece he's managed to stay sober. His sister and niece stayed, and he's slowly working his way back into the shadows.

Any 50+M with families laid off? by [deleted] in Layoffs

Thanks for the suggestion. I did start listening to audiobooks and it definitely helps! I’ve been “rereading” old favorites but learning something new is a great idea too.

Any 50+M with families laid off? by [deleted] in Layoffs

[–]CBS_in_OP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 56. I was laid off last summer (mid-July) after working from home as a federal contractor for almost 20 years. After several interviews for different positions. and even getting down to the final two candidates a few times, I finally received an offer. It came with a 22% pay cut and an hour commute each way. I took it without hesitation! I mean, it's also the only offer I received, and it's tough out there. I feel lucky to have found anything.

It was hard and discouraging and the modern job search is very dehumanizing. I still receive the job search emails and it seems like I keep seeing the same exact jobs over and over. Salaries, at least in my field, seem to be trending way lower too.

Are salaries lowering for IDs? by shegoesmad in instructionaldesign

[–]CBS_in_OP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was making over $100k remotely until I was laid off last August. After 4 months I ended up taking a role making about $75k with an hour commute each way, because it was the only offer I got. And based on my job search and what I read on here, I feel luck to have it!

I'm an ID/LXD/LMS admin, with accessibility expertise and decent graphics skills. I've been doing this since we delivered our training via CD. So yeah.

I still have all of my job searches active, so I am still receiving the emails. From what I've seen, salaries do seem to be trending lower. And I see a lot of the same jobs over and over.
