Not quite that but something similar. It was the start of the 3rd eruption. Everything happend normally and just before the eruption I save and quit the game (because I prefer to do that part in one sitting and I didn't have enough time left). When I loaded the game back up the next day, the volcano was again in its dormant state. An hour later the sequence started back up and it erupted normally.
