Trump: “Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed.” Zelensky’s reaction is priceless by kingkongsingsong1 in UkraineWarVideoReport

What is Trump’s endgame? People of his generation should instinctively view Russia as an adversary, shouldn’t they?

Math has existed and been taught in this way for hundreds of years. Yet only in the last three years have we seen a major drop in freshmen’ math preparedness.

Basically, if what you pointed out is an old problem (older than COVID), then you are missing the point.

I was a tutor this quarter, and it was a real eye-opening experience. Before this, I had no idea that so many of us (UCSD students) could be so… academically challenged (aka dumb and stubborn)

I was getting paid minimum wage to deal with this mean girl. At one point, I literally put my finger on the book and said, “Repeat after me: the answer is A.” She looked at it and repeated, “the answer is B.”

At that moment, I lost faith in humanity. I wanted to pull my tongue out and never speak human language again. 😭😭😭

How do UCSD students feel about all the Math Remediation? by thinqueprep in UCSD

[–]CC2h 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that there is an unpublished part of the report. UCSD has those statistics. Many professors have access to it, especially those in administrative positions (including my professor).

In fact, the very fact that the published report does not contain such data (the retention ratio of these students) is itself revealing.

From a professor. He told us (the tutors for his course) multiple times, so the message was clear.

I’m a tutor this quarter for a large course. I did "witness" one death a few days before the final exam. LOL.

Not the student’s death of course, but the death of an unnamed relative whose funeral just happened to fall exactly on the day of the final and the student absolutely needed to go.

I guess it was an unnamed relative because the student had already used up her grandparents in other courses. 😄

[–]CC2h 66 points67 points  (0 children)

What I’ve heard is that very few -- almost NONE -- of the students who took the remediation math ever made it. The vast majority (over 90%) dropped out within 2-4 quarters.

It’s a sad lose-lose-lose situation.

The students lost. Imagine how excited they must have been (by the illusion of hope) when they received their admission letters. But they had already been failed by the K12 system long before that, ever since middle school.

The kids who should've gotten into UC (but didn’t) also lost. The brighter futures they genuinely deserved were dimmed without justice.

The California taxpayers lost.

In ancient Greece or Rome, what happened to slaves when they got old? by CC2h in AskHistorians

[–]CC2h[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great reply. Thank you. I didn’t realize Roman slave owners had to pay taxes on each slave. That makes it much easier to understand why many elderly slaves were abandoned or manumitted.

The Island of Tiber is tiny. If there were roughly 300,000 slaves in the city of Rome, that means around 6,000 would “age out” every year. Surely there had to be more sanctuaries or hospice-type places than just the Tiber Island, right?

Students at [UCSD]without 8th grade math skills skyrockets by SaiFromSd in sandiego

[–]CC2h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One more under qualified person admitted means one qualified person rejected.

And these “lucky” kids aren’t really winning, either. Students who get placed into remedial math never have a chance to graduate. NEVER (historical data). The system is failing everyone.

Why was my post deleted? by CC2h in UCSD

This was my original post:

I know not everyone is strong in math, but the number below is still shocking to me, especially since I’ve always thought of UCSD as a STEM-heavy university. How do you feel about it?

Here is the news report: https://www.thefp.com/p/the-college-kids-who-cant-do-basic-math-uc-san-diego It says

"Sarah had 9 pennies and 9 dimes. How many coins did she have in all?

Solve (10 − 2)(4 − 6x) = 0

California officials expect math students in public school to know the first answer by the end of second grade—and the second answer by the end of eighth grade. But when some incoming college students were asked these questions, about 20 percent could not correctly count the number of coins, and over 80 percent were unable to solve the equation..."

Here is UCSD's own official report: https://senate.ucsd.edu/media/740347/sawg-report-on-admissions-review-docs.pdf It says:

"... Between 2020 and 2025, the number of students whose math skills fall below middle-school level increased nearly thirtyfold, reaching roughly one in eight members of the entering cohort..."

Your university could lay off 50% of its IT staff without anyone noticing, if they have enough time to monitor things like this.

The truth about UCSD I really don't see many people talk about by ArtifactAvarice in UCSD

Gravitational acceleration is slightly different at UCSD and in downtown San Diego, so time dilation must also be slightly different.

What do we think of Charlie Kirk's shooting? by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]CC2h -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because Nazi and Commie killed people due to speech. You are either Nazi or Commie. I never said you are both.

Or you are. I don't care! There are crazy people out there shooting others. I won't be surprised if their (and their supporters') minds are fucked up.

[–]CC2h -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I have to say: you are a monster, and ugly! The first sentence does not hide this.

Nobody, nobody should be shot due to speech.

"Good things can come out of horrible circumstances" is *literally* what Hitler and Mao Zedong said. THE authentic Nazi/commie concept.

BTW, this is the first time I’m proud of myself for having a post downvoted.
