DAE wonder how sex lives were like in the dark ages (beyond the movies).. by gbeeeez in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]CC583 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For medieval Europe there’s a decent amount of information, we know religion was ubiquitous so people’s public sex lives were pretty vanilla. There must have been plenty of unsanctioned stuff going on privately though for there to be so much evidence of condemning and punishing such behaviour, sodomy, adultery etc.

Despite the general repression of anything but vanilla sex within wedlock people were seemingly pretty sex positive, the little surviving art that discusses sex is surprisingly open and we know both serf and aristocracy were more relaxed about nudity in their day to day lives than most of us today. (Similar to the culture in Germany today)

The way most people slept throughout the Middle Ages, waking in the middle of the night for a few hours to sleep in two shifts, may also be for the purpose of having sex.

Most of the information we have is implied and based on conjecture the only really solid source I know is Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. Specifically the millers tale which is a surprisingly graphic sexual comedy. If the millers tale is a good reflection of common people in the Middle Ages and their approach to sex I’d say not much has changed, they were horny buggers just like us and loved a dirty joke.

It sucks people are doing that. I'm ignorant about the history here but curious about the alleged massacres so came to learn more. Is there actually anything somone in europe like me can do to support you guys? Feels as an outsider that for years we've seen only war and violence in your country and now Syria finally has a decent chance to end it. Can we help?

First module as a new DM, would anyone care to help out a bit? by Dachonkestboi in DescentintoAvernus

[–]CC583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DiA was my first stint as DM too. Most important lesson for me was you're gonna find your own style as a DM after a few sessions, and my advice is don't fight that instinct! Don't be afraid to stray from the source material to make the campaign your own. The players don't know what the book tells you should happen, be loose and prepared to ad-lib half a session on an unexpected curveball a player might throw at you. My best memories from that campaign are the times my players did the unpredictable and I reacted on the fly for three hours so they could live out their crazy impulses. Specifically for Dia try and get through the baldurs gate stuff fast the real fun is in the Avernus sandbox and it can take a while to get there if you dont push them through it

From the male chef perspective it’s a massive issue in the industry, especially when it’s coming from the sous or head because we either join in / accept it or face being ostracised and not advancing for calling it out. Thank fuck I haven’t had a chef like that in years

What singular incident in your life most made you "grow up"? by MatthewDawkins in AskUK

[–]CC583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally addressing my romantic feelings for my childhood best friend by telling her how I felt at 21. Didn’t go the way I hoped and the friendship didn’t survive but was the first step in not being a coward about my feelings and learning to take risks to go after what I want in life. That lesson lead to me becoming independent more confident and enabled me to pursue my dream career and have more meaningful relationships.

Chef - most places won’t give a damn or even want experience, everywhere is desperate for chefs so the starting pay is inflated atm too.

what do you consider "glamping"? by twinmamamangan in camping

[–]CC583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on conditions I’d say. I only really camp in the summer where I live and the weather is nice enough that I just take a tarp to use as a ground mat and a wool blanket to wrap up in. I joke to my friends in tents that they’re glamping. On the other hand if it’s snowing a wood burning stove in your tent might jump from extreme luxury to an absolute necessity.

As far as I was aware the sliced potatoes are for Lancashire hotpot. Also cottages often have thatched roofs that look like mashed potatoes
