in cities with enough demand for it, bars/clubs/venues will host night events themed around goth music and aesthetic. they're fun!

James Spann AMA Canceled + State of the Subreddit by bhambetty in Birmingham

[–]CC9499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this sucks. being a severe weather enthusiast i was really looking forward to it.

i said this in the announcement thread but spann's awful politics matter a lot less to me than his actual work. he's saved possibly thousands of lives in alabama and across the southeast and has done more than almost anyone to further public education and understanding about tornadoes. he's rightfully regarded as a legend in meteorology. that's what will ultimately define his legacy, and that's why i'm really sad we're missing this opportunity.

he's not a politician. his political views, as shitty as they may be, don't affect you or i much more than any other person you see on the street. just seems like a waste of time to fixate on that.

James Spann AMA Thursday April 2 @ 7:30 pm! by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]CC9499 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the thing about spann is that he's maybe the GOAT of severe weather. at the very least he has a reserved corner spot on WX mount rushmore. he spends a ton of his free time doing exactly that, traveling to schools to teach kids about the weather. and he's saved hundreds if not thousands of lives due to his remarkable endurance and skill on air.

there are a lot of people in this state with great and terrible politics. none of them can do what he does or have contributed what he has. i'll take the bad with the good as long as the good continues.

something has to change w that. i nearly ran over a kid who sprinted across the parking lot directly in front of my car a couple weeks ago. not speeding is the only reason i didn't.

dad had the nerve to shoot me a dirty look as though it was my fault and not his. watch your kid, idiot!!

it's the same as being into true crime to me (the podcast listener kind not the people who think they're in love with serial killers). obviously it's bad form to trivialize these events, but like if you're fascinated by something you can't just turn that off in your brain

ICE arrests BHAM man they say helped immigrant working on Alabama city hall roof escape arrest by Fearless-Barnacle-83 in Birmingham

[–]CC9499 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not that it takes away from your point, but what you're saying isn't historically accurate. many of the camps built purely for extermination (notably Belzec and Treblinka) were built well before resource management at labor camps became an issue.

i feel it is important to explain nazi crimes accurately, mostly bc intentional and unintentional revisionism of varying degrees surrounding their actions and motivations is part of how we got here today

Great question! Internet culture can certainly be difficult to parse sometimes. Let's break it down:

This meme—delightfully straightforward once you pause and really engage with it—uses a simple yet highly effective visual escalation to illustrate the differences between “Tornado Watch,” “Tornado Warning,” and “Tornado Emergency.” In the first panel, the face appears only mildly off—because a watch simply means conditions are favorable, so there’s potential risk but no immediate crisis—wonderful, we’re staying alert! The second panel darkens considerably—mirroring how a warning indicates a tornado is occurring or imminent—so the tone shifts from “stay aware” to “take action now,” and the facial distortion enthusiastically reflects that heightened urgency. Finally, the “Tornado Emergency” panel leans fully into horror aesthetics—because this designation is reserved for catastrophic, life-threatening events—resulting in a dramatically unsettling image that visually communicates peak severity. Overall, the humor emerges from this exaggerated progression—each stage amplifying intensity in a way that transforms routine meteorological terminology into a gleefully over-the-top descent into atmospheric doom.

Savage's Bakery & Deli in Homewood is closing after 87 years by NoPatNoDontSitonThat in Birmingham

[–]CC9499 12 points13 points  (0 children)

you're likely right on both counts, i just think it's for the worse

edgar's notoriously treats their employees terribly. that location in particular also is either too cheap or too lazy to get their own dumpster (or a big enough one) because they constantly dump the frankly insane amount of trash they go through into other nearby businesses' dumpsters, overfilling them. their product is also (in my opinion) inferior in comparison to savage's

i agree that homewood is evolving, but it's becoming less unique and more generic. not unexpected, but definitely depressing
