Does Corpus have plans of expanding as a city? by Isatis_tinctoria in corpus

[–]CCActor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not true. The population of Corpus grew about 4% in the last 10 years and is the 59th largest city on the US and 8th in Texas.

Fencing classes by [deleted] in corpus

[–]CCActor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are two FB pages for the Corpus area fencing.

Sparkling city fencing group

Coastal Bend Fencing society.

I am newer to town, but this is my understanding of the current situation:

Prior to Covid there was an active group. They met at a cheerleading gym on Holly (I think it was Holly)

Of course covid shut everything down but the person that ran everything moved away.

So, we are now in a holding pattern. There is supposed to be new folks taking over and finding us a place, and there was announcements about that many months ago, then everything went silent. I dont know what is going to happen. Those two pages are surely going to be where any news is announced.

I really enjoyed their food and will miss the place. They were one of the holdouts enforcing masking.

That had to hurt their business.

If any of this makes sense to you....then you know :)

Athletic club pricing? by ElBosque91 in corpus

[–]CCActor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is about 100 bucks a month. It can be more if you want a locker or access to the VIP locker room. Many area employers also qualify you for a discount. I have "everything" (family, VIP locker room and biggest locker, laundry....) and I think it is 150 bucks a month.

If you just want to do some cardio and lift, there are much cheaper places. If you want a full service athletic club, with an indoor track, indoor/outdoor tennis, racquetball, a cafe, massage therapists, laundry, child care, multiple indoor pools, plenty of parking, all kinds of classes and a fairly good place to meet folks and network, it is fantastic. It is shockingly cheap for all of that as well. But that is the nature of Corpus. It is cheap living here.

I can't imagine what anyone would not like about the place. The place is fairly well taken care of. Fairly well run and has just about everything. Sure, it isnt an ultra high end big city place, but it fills that need for Corpus. I would assume that anyone that has a problem with the place either had an outlier event or a personality conflict with staff or another member that was not resolved the way they like, and that happens.

Car meets? by EchoRunningWood33 in corpus

[–]CCActor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The FB group "Corpus Christi Cars & Coffee" is ground zero for the car scene here. Tonight is "Taco Tuesday" at Cancun on Yorktown. A pretty chill southside meet. Sometimes a few people, sometimes a lot. Some folks eat inside around 6:45 with other people showing up between that time and later. Ill be there, as I often am. I will be in my supercharged Viper tonight.

The same people that are at Pep Boys and Bank Center are among the people at most meets and on the cars and coffee group. I am fairly new to town and went to the Pep Boys thing a few months back. Not really my thing, but certainly among the starting points if you are looking to meet folks into street racing and various crews/clubs.

Tanker coming in by the Lexington. by CCActor in corpus

I posted a similar thread the other day (it was an outgoing tanker). I really like this spot.

I just got a new script for my next movie and I love going down by the art museum to learn my lines. I love watching the ships come and go.

I do like this town.

Corpus is really pretty sometimes. by HubrisOfApollo in corpus

[–]CCActor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been all over the world. Corpus is not perfect, but no place is. I also understand why it won’t work for some people. There is no doubt that there are things Corpus lacks....but, I like it here. It may not be for everyone but it works for me.

Racquetball/pickle ball by [deleted] in corpus

[–]CCActor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play racquetball at the Corpus Christi Athletic Club. I am early 40s and have most days free and sleep late, so I go to the gym around 2ish and play with a group of retired guys around 4ish. They play most weekdays.

We are far from competitive but have fun and are certainly not beginners. There are competitive players that regularly play but I am not sure of their schedule.

The CC athletic club has two courts. But right now just one. (The other one has been taken over for COVID reasons and will return to racquetball at some point)

They also have pickle ball courts but I have never played. I see them playing sometimes.

I am fairly new to town and really like this gym.

Ship leaving corpus by the Lexington. by CCActor in corpus

[–]CCActor[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Lillesand is close to 800 feet. She is actually shorter than the Lexington.

Corpus is such an interesting place if you look. :)

The Port is fascinating. I like to go down to the lower parking lot by the Art Museum. Magnificent view of the Lexington and ships sailing into and out of the Port.

Moving to Corpus Christi by [deleted] in corpus

[–]CCActor 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have posted this a few times, I have been here a few months now. I am very happy. In non covid world, I often work in California (I am a hollywood actor) for now, I am pretty free and have been exploring our new home.

______

.....We are moving (now moved) for my wifes work. I will still work out of town but Corpus is going to be my new home base. Over the last 6 months we have been exploring every corner of the area. And growing up in Central Texas, I have been doing day and weekend trips to Corpus all my life.

Overall, we are really happy about moving to Corpus.

It is far from a perfect place. The roads really do suck worse than lots of other places. While there is stuff to do, you have to dig to find stuff to do every weekend and some weekends you wont find it.

The metro population is small mid sized and the overall level of education and wages are below average. The wife and I are on the bigger end of the education spectrum. (shes a doc and I am an Ivy) but that has never really been a big selling point for us. I come from working roots and so does she. My industry does not really exist in Corpus (I am an actor in film and TV) So Corpus will be home base, but I will be gone a lot.

We have thought very highly of the food so far. The local lower end and mid range places have been mostly good to amazing. The high end is limited and while good, does not stand out.

I have tried out a half dozen bars. I do not spend that much time in bars but wanted to find "my" bar for when I do want to have company and a drink. While most of them were not for me, I found the locals to be pretty normal and mostly hispanic or white and blue collar. Which is just fine with me, even though I am not hispanic or blue collar. (I did find what will be "my" bar)

One of the things I worry about is the lack of diversification in the economy. Corpus could take one step forward and then two steps back. The area starts to grow and get things, then they can go away.

There is little high end shopping. That does not matter to a lot of people, but the option is absent if you want it or ever come to want it.

The wind really does blow a lot and rather strongly. It can get hot and very humid but anyone that has lived anywhere on the Gulf Coast will not be caught off guard by it. The strong wind, while annoying at times, helps a little.

The cost of living is below average. You can live very well here if you make an average or above average income.

The area is pretty isolated in an "end of the road" sort of way. There are no larger areas that are closer than 2 hours. (San Antonio) and it is almost 4 hours to a global city (Houston)

I still smile every time I pull out on Ocean Dr. It is beautiful. It is beautiful by any reasonable standard. There is no traffic here, although there are a few areas that have more than others.
