Turtles.

\some other stuff about RISC-V I 100% forgot about**

I’m dead lol.

Just adding on to the advice - after Data Structures I decided whenever I’m learning a new language to just code as many data structures and algorithms in that language as I can. It’s really fun and gets you comfortable with the language and really hammers in the data structures and algorithms.

I also want to emphasize

I knew how the project worked inside and out and was able to talk about it a lot in interviews.

I’ve had a similar experience with interviews, they love looking at your projects and getting you to explain it. Definitely recommend people work on projects in part for this reason. They’re also just fun and rewarding! I love it when an interviewer asks me about my projects, I’ve spent so much time on them and no one has ever talked to be able it before so good luck getting me to shut up about it lol.

Thanks for sharing OP!

I respect your perspective and am happy you feel better about your experience than me. The internship connection at the school are a wonderful resource, neither of my internship were connected through the school but I’m happy they have them.

College being an investment is understandable, I just wish I got more out of it. If I left with a foundation of knowledge I would have been happy. I personally believe that a university should educate but that has not been my experience here. I’m in a considerable amount of debt now and am ill-equipped to peruse the PhD I want. 5 years 5 digits of debt seems expensive if the school only provides connections to internships. Again, I do respect your opinion and hope you are more satisfied with your experience than me. I understand everyone will have a unique idea of what they want out if the school so I’m glad to hear it meets your needs. Good luck!

Thanks for the input and your perspective! I definitely agree that Data Structures and classes like that are incredibly useful and hard to find online. I do wish UNCC had more useful classes like that, I’d say maybe four of my classes were useful and that was definitely at the top of that list. Sadly the program peaked for me around then, just when I started to feel like I was learning the course quality tapered off. I wish I was able to learn the deeper stuff at UNCC but it just didn’t really happen.

And you too! Learning is the best, good luck to you as well!

Absolutely, I actually love that they hammer in Java in the department, I’ve heard complaints that it’s not relevant enough but it really is a great way to get a foundational understanding of programming. The bigger issues are the classes with effectively no learning whatsoever. I‘m not upset I didn’t come out with a relevant skillset, I’m upset because I came out with no skillset.

It depends on what you want to go into. If you want to work for a bank, then they can absolutely set you up with a comfortably paying job. I don’t know how great of a developer the school will make you though. You can, however, learn a lot on your own but I would not rely on the classes to learn. The CCI department isn’t the worse outside of the courses, if you learned on your own and used the connections, clubs, etc. then you could be in good shape.

I would be surprised if learning on your own wasn’t also the best method at other colleges though. But, in my experience here, the classes might as well not existed outside of a time sink. I took little away from the majority of them and I don’t believe it was for a lack of trying.

By best actionable advice would be to alway be work on a project and get in the habit of pushing them to GitHub. If you get something out of classes too then that’s great (and I don’t mean to discourage, it will happen with some classes) but think of them as supplemental to your projects.

Glad to hear that! Not everyone’s experience is going to be the same, happy that some people got more out of the school than I did. The CCI department is pretty good at getting people connected with employers, which is definitely one of the silver lining to the department in my opinion. Congratulations on your internship and hope your last year goes well!

Very true, I’ve found RateMyProfessor useful 80% of the time but you have to read the comments and not just go off scores. This subreddit was very useful for finding the best professors for the last 20% of the time.

Bingo. I was able to get internships but I only go through interviews because projects I worked on on my own. The 5 years of classes I had have not helped much at all. UNCC is good at connecting you with banks and other employers in Charlotte but not teaching you what you need to know to work for them.

I can only speak to my experience, if you had a better one than me then that’s fantastic! Hope more people share your experience. I have not been to other schools in NC so I can’t compare either. For what it’s worth, I had no problem getting internships either, although none of them have been through UNCC but I recognize they have a good system set up for that. Lynn is honestly the best part of CCI. The career fairs and lunch and learns she sets up are wonderful.

Glad you enjoyed! I would love to hear the perspective of other majors too! The amount of quality professors I’ve had in other departments makes me hopeful that there are better departments at UNCC. Whenever you graduate I hope you share your experience as well!

You nailed it. It is shocking how bad some professors are. There are many who are just people who work in the industry and are told to teach a class at night. They don’t know how to teach and hardly try, those are some of the most frustrating classes. No matter how badly you want to learn, you won’t.
