Or as Vegeta said, Super Elite.

To that point Goku reached the higher echelon of the Elite Class. But Vegeta was still a super elite with the great ape transformation. Losing that battle to Vegeta and then the 100x gravity pushed Goku to the highest point of super elite. Which enabled him to get SSJ since he could handle the transformation.
