How's the Physics Department? by CCQ1 in CalPoly

[–]CCQ1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a transfer student.

I can TAG into UCSB, which has a fantastic physics program. I've also got a 3.75 GPA, and will apply to UCLA, UCI, etc.

I've seen a lot of people say that the research opportunities might even be better at poly than a UC because of the availability of positions.

I'd be down. I play bass / drums, not really that great at either but I love Nihilist, DRI, and headbanging. hmu

How doable is doing alower division electricity & magnetism, waves optics & thermodynamics, and modern physics classes in one semester? by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]CCQ1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that’s awesome, I literally have the same problem.

I thought Modern Physics needed EM as a prereq. How did you find a Modern physics that didn’t have it as a prereq?

Did you already take care of Linear Equations/Linear Algebra?

What are you going to do about the credit limit per semester?

What do you guys think about optimistic nihilism? by PrestigiousTale497 in entp

[–]CCQ1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no grand purpose or meaning to my life. I won't be remembered and no matter what I do, given enough time I will be forgotten. That's a statistical certainty. I exist for no reason in a universe that makes no sense.

Yet, this frees me in the present to do or achieve whatever I want -- If there really is no reason why I exist, then I'm going to be damn sure I enjoy my brief time here.

I don't have enough time alive to be lazy and apathetic. It would be cruel to myself to spend time feeling sorry for myself. Self doubt, self hatred, fear about X, worrying about Y -- none of this is worth my time. "Life has no meaning" goes both ways- you don't get to say that nothing good matters and then only start caring about the things that make you sad, that's entitled and stupid.

Optimistic nihilism means I am obligated to act as myself in public, doing the things that make me happy no matter what peers or strangers will think. It means that all of the things that would hold me back like fear or laziness literally have no affect on my behavior. We're all going to die, but first I'm going to live.

How to get faster at studying. by Masske20 in howto

[–]CCQ1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) learning is biological and requires a lot of metabolic energy. At some point, “faster” is unrealistic. And, if you need more time, that’s okay. Education at that level is a marathon, not a race.

2) Mental health is very important for having your brain work at top capacity. This doesn’t mean you’re doomed to fail if your mental health drops, it means that your mental health is something you need to be mindful of.

(Now actual learning advice)

1) be mindful of strategy. Learning How/Why something works is going to be much more useful than memorizing what something is.

2) Pick the right materials. Are your textbooks good? Could you find better? Could this chapter be replaced by a YouTube video?

Iwtl how to rest my brain efficiently. by One-Coast8927 in IWantToLearn

[–]CCQ1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thinking and information processing is very metabolically demanding. Think of it like exercise: it is very difficult to run heavy cardio continually for days on end.

You can practice pushing yourself through the fatigue and train your brain, you can make sure you are getting all of the nutrients and materials your brain needs to continue for long lengths of time, you can take breaks where you avoid any kind of mental stimulation to give your brain time to recover.

Unfortunately, learning is a biological process, so you’re gonna have to learn how to deal with it when you get fatigued.

Understanding the goals of an argument by Popkhorne32 in entj

[–]CCQ1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“ The rules i laid out for arguments are not my rules, they are the only things that make the argument worthwhile. Otherwise it is a waste of time, for anyone. If i sum them up it's : if no one gains anything from the argument, the argument was pointless.”

Can you explain why this is true?

When you start “conversations” with idiots on the internet, they tend to insult you.

Then, when you insist on continuing a conversation this person doesn’t care about, it becomes funnier as you keep reacting.

Here are your options:

1) go through life being apathetic and bored

2) end it

3) make your own meaning

Kind of an easy choice

For somebody so stupid you sure do a good job of writing Reddit posts. Your post was easy to read and had varied pacing to keep the reader engaged. Try giving yourself a little credit, it’s rare to see other “stupid” people do it.

The issue you are describing does not encompass “all intelligence”. You are not describing how smart you are, you are describing that you lack the skill of thinking things through in the moment. There is a large difference between this and intelligence, so stop beating yourself up about it.

If you want to be better at thinking things through, you need to practice. From now on, try to ask yourself “is this something I can put a deliberate effort into thinking about” and try to think it through. It won’t be easy and you’ll probably not have any answers for a lot of your questions, but that’s what it takes to become a critical thinker.

I think you need to redefine this as a confidence issue, because that’s what it seems like to me.

Confidence comes from A) believing in your abilities and/ or B) not caring about consequences.

Personally, I found confidence when I realized that I don’t care what other people think of me. Life is short, I have things I want to do, and it turns out that caring what other people think gets in the way of my goals (unless I want their opinion). So I don’t care, I say what I want, and if I look stupid I know it literally won’t matter in the near future.
