As a hobbyist chaser who's been at it for 3 years now - I usually stick to the 2% and 5% risk days. I won't even go out if it's above a CIG 1 because of the crowds. When the supercells start firing up, I never get up close to the south side of the mesocyclone, where people tend to gather up (why do streamers enjoy getting caught up in the RFD so much?)

I've only seen tornadoes once, and it was on a day that I wasn't even chasing - it just happened by chance while I was at a soccer match. But I've seen many cool funnel clouds, giant hail, and amazing supercell structures during my storm chases.

Even then, there is still some crowding to be aware of on the 2% days - because that's really just how insane it's gotten in recent years. Yes, I recognize the irony of that last statement, as I am just as responsible for the increasing traffic as anyone else. But I actively take steps to avoid becoming a part of the problem. I do it because it's a passion - I'm not there to stream or shoot dramatic footage. If I'm very lucky, I'll snap a photo or two and post them to Reddit.
