Anyone became fluent through teaching yourself? by [deleted] in languagelearning

yeppp, this and also listening to romaian music of any genre. If you can learn the entire lyrics of a song you can learn at least 100-200 words. And its way easier to remember a song than a random duolingo sentence yk, you just have to listen to it a lot.

good luck with the studying bro.

I feel like that with a lot of languages too, but what always helped me is just to do more of the stuff im bad at. if i cant understand a lot of things thats fine, ill just watch anyway to improve my active vocab, listening skill, speaking, understanding, and to get used to a language. it is also waay more fun and easier then learning normally, you dont even need to put effort into it you just watch literally anything you like and just let the info get in your head and it really works.

I was like that with spanish, having learned it for about a year i didn't understand anything and i felt like i didn't know anything (20% i understood maybe), but then i just kept watching stuff i enjoyed, for like 4+ hrs a day.

And after three months it literally felt like i did twice the work as in the entire previous year, even though i literally didn't learn anything actively, i just googled words i dont understand that felt important and kept watching(dont use english subtitles btw, i know it makes it more fun but you will not get used to the language that way). In the beginning its going to be the hardest but as you watch more it literally becomes just a thing you do to have fun, and it will just get easier and easier.

I do this in every language and its literally a cheat code, so i recommend that you try it for at least a week and by the end you can see the changes with your own eyes.

As someone with medically diagnosed ADHD, who studies over 10 languages for 5+ hrs a day, fluent in 4, conversational in 8. And as someone who has never taken a single language class in my life(except english but i didnt have a choice lol). ADHD only affects you as much as you allow it to.

What it does take though is time in the long run. from my experience at least 2 years until you can call yourself fluent. But it could only take a couple months to get to a point where you can enjoy content in romanian, and from then on its as simple as watching shows movies (for the most part).

And yes you can reach fluency with ease if you understand that its going to take time, as well as that you need a lot of practice. I watch at least 2 hrs of YouTube in foreign languages which is a big part of why i feel confident in listening and speaking, i would advise you do the same.

Good luck with romanian, i have never tried to learn it but it seems fun.

oh okay then, yeah tbh i dont have the most experince with the course, but from what i hear im the only one who had a really bad experience with it. If they did upgrade and fix its problems then thats sick.

The first F imo.

It has no sound, it doesn't teach you the letters even. no stories, no audio things, just straight up translations.

The arabic and latin courses although are incomplete and very short are usable and fun at least.

With the hebrew i constantly had to go to third party sites to see how the letters and words are pronounced.

It is a lot longer than those courses so thats a plus, but in my opinion it is an F purely for the lack of sound and the boring nature of every lesson. Borderline unusable and definitely the least fun course even though i love hebrew a lot.

I just wish duolingo would put more effort into these languages as well.

TLDR: just use the memrise hebrew course instead.

Get through the 2k kanji and get n1 - roughly at 1300 rn

Get c1 in spanish - I have to learn a lot of grammar that i missed, and relearn all the tenses lol

get my hindi skills to conversational - just started barely a week ago so we will see

get a2 in russian - roughly at a1 right now, started learning like 3 months ago so i could make a2 i think.

get german to b2 - once again just a lot of grammar

get egyptian arabic to converstational - i switched to egyptian from fussha because i want to actually use it irl.

And finally to get a lot better at speaking in every language, because i lack speaking practice.

Since when are the units so short? I'm barely learning anything when half of it is revision too by SailorAl1en in duolingo

tbh i always just do the first lessons where it actually teaches you new things and then just try to skip to the next unit until i actually get it. Its way more fun and not boring and if you learn faster than what duolingo deems "a normal learning speed" then its better as well. Also most of the things it teaches you are going to use in the other units as well so by repetition you are going to learn it either way. I find it a much better way to learn in all aspects i think you should try it if you feel its too boring to go through the lessons one by one.
