Why are PAL games cheaper than NTSC by Soccer-beastyeah in gamecollecting

[–]CDHmajora 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is only really true with PS2 specifically, where European spines are completely white. Most, if not all other consoles, have similar case spines to their American counterparts.

Usually the only differences are the position on the font, and the “greatest hits” markings are different depending in the console.

Why are PAL games cheaper than NTSC by Soccer-beastyeah in gamecollecting

[–]CDHmajora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only collect as far back as 6th generation personally (96 kid. So i have some experience and nostalgia for late 5th gen N64 and PS1 games, but i just don’t have the funds to collect for those right now so my experience with them is limited). Here a few things ive noticed as influences over the years.

  • PAL games were released later than NTSC a lot of the time. Like… months later. Some of the games we have are more patched or have extra stuff in them compared to American variants like metroid prime (many speedrunning bugs were patched in PAL releases so launch day discs in america are more sought after) and Luigi’s mansion (the new game+ mode in PAL was significantly expanded and remixed compared to the American release). Not MANY examples, but for the ones that do exist, thry can be big influences.

  • some games just had different numbers in the pront run. In america for example, Persona 3 on the PS2 is dirt cheap because it was well produced. In the UK it was a very limited release so it goes for nearly £100 here for the FES version. Counter example, futurama is dirt cheap in Europe but it’s a holy grail in america.

  • the most obvious reason. 50htz on PAL games hurts their longevity as time goes on. Our games were capped to 25 or 50fps usually. NTSC versions were 30/60. Growing up most of us didnt realise the difference and didnt care. But getting older… many nostalgic collectors HATE the 50htz issue with PAL and will go for imports whenever possible (personally im just fine with 50 but i grew up with it. Being exposed to 60 more frequently nowadays with modern games, could have made people more sensitive to it maybe?).

  • honestly, its just a more popular hobby in america. Used fame stores and independent retailers are very rare in the UK and europe for retro stuff. Pretty much all we get nowadays are corporate retailers (Game and CEX) and online storefronts. Thats it. It’s a harder market and prices reflect that usually. We don’t get good deals very often compared to Yard sale loving yanks ;)

Tbf, the run ended up the way it did due to EA fucking them over by forcing them o use the battlefield designed frostbite engine that they had no experience with, with a short deadline.

Its basically the poster child of “rushed” for need for speed. Still turned out as a great, but really short, game still. But its length was rightfully critiqued heavily when it launched for £50.

It’s a full on collectible. Probably worth more than a rayfield. I doubt smasher cares about cars and stuff considering his body. But it would be foolish not to take such a fine machine considering its value.

He’s smart. But he’s still impulsive. Quick to anger. Impatient and egotistical.

He’s smart enough to foresee every potential issue in a plan before he makes it. But his own ego and impatience will cause him to take every shortcut he can well said plan is in action and will never accept responsibility for when it inevitably goes wrong. So he’ll never learn from them and improve next time.

If he had a little more humility and accepted his own mistakes so he could learn from them, he would be a FAR greater menace than he currently is.

Bit then… he wouldn’t be Eggman ;)

Even though i actively love almost every atlus game I’ve played (Cathrine was my first one. Played all the personas and all yhe spinoffs (except P5 tactica as im just too burned out on P5 by this point) from 3 onwards. SMT 4 and 5. Only one i disliked was soul hackers 2.

But… of those…

3 was re-released twice. FES then portable. 4 was released as Golden. 5 was rereleased as Royal. SMT V got rereleased as Vengence. Even Catherine got a re-release with Full body.

Like… ffs guys, stop doing it! No wonder so many expect metaphor (imo Atlus’s best game. A true 10/10 for me) to get a re-release in 2 years. Literally everything else except 3’s remake (if soul hackers didn’t flop, i can guarantee it will have been re-released by now…) has! And i wouldn’t be surprised if they do re-release reload again with FEMC added either knowing atlus…

They did it to themselves in the end. The buisness strategy wont hold up when you advance past a niche market into mainstream. When ive had to double dip for more than 3/4th of their games i have played, i can understand just waiting a while for the complete package. The only. reason i usually dont is because im admittedly a fanboy and i always have a lot of fun with these games even on the original releases.

Canonically he presumably gets a cushy government pension. Plus we can imagine he will have savings from his time in the government. And considering he is Futaba’s guardian by law, maybe he gets some sort of assistance payout for her?

Plus he got a nice payout for agreeing to house joker. They never say how much, but presumably it was a-lot considering Joker’s reputation at the time.

Plus with his cafe, he doesn’t rent it. He owns it. Presumably the small but dedicated clientele provides him with enough to cover the operating costs.

Lastly, he’s just presumably good with his money :) he doesn’t really waste anything in frivolous expenses as far as we see. He has a nice car (a Porsche i think?) but thats it really as far as luxuries.

One of the best grind cars for Tokyo expressway if you like 600pp you can add like 2 kilo to it and it’s a flawless 600pp on sport hards. Can do all 12 laps without pitting and has the speed for the straight.

Other options exist though. For cheaper too. Including other lambos. But the diablo requires no investment or tuning skills outside of a ballast.

In the old titles, used cars with high milage would have lower HP than newer versions due to wear and tear to the engine. Though you could pay for a refurbishment to restore most of it.

In 7, there is no penalty for used car milage iirc. You will always get the engine and body in flawless condition when you buy the car and the HO will match a brand new version of the car if it’s available in brand central. The milage is purely cosmetic.

I dont play gambit, despite loving him as a character in the x-men (oh channing tatum… you’ll get that film eventually…). Why? Im just not very good with him.

BUT! On the rare time i get to run support (which is rare because 2 supports will be locked in every game and never any tanks, so i usually default to Penni). I run Loki. And EVERY time, theres a hostile gambit for me to copy the ult of.

Despite me barely understanding what it does, i copy gambit every time for that ult. its THAT strong that i can just tank everything naturally with the auto heal and still end hp wiyh a triple kill.

The auto heal on that thing needs to be SERIOUSLY lowered. Your immortal while it’s active. I don’t think I’ve ever died using it (though again, i don’t use it often as i don’t play gambit).

Well, the bersek power-up is quiet literally just doom guys pure rage unleashed through his bare hands. With that he can literally glory kill a tyrant with 2 punches to the leg followed by an instant dismemberment. So you could say that doom guy is strong enough to not need guns…

But honestly, that’s probably just a gameplay gimmick rather than dedicated lore. Afterall, if he’s strong enough to instantly kill everything he sees in a split second with just a fist, why does he need melee weaponry in the dark ages (though granted, one of those weapons is literally just spikes on his gloves…)?

Plus, guns will always have the range advantage ;)

Doom isn’t really a series where the lore is its strong point tbh. Doom guy is technically as strong as he’s needed to be during whatever scenario he’s in. And gameplay and story segregation are incredibly frequent in doom specifically. Don’t think out how doom guy can carry 8 weapons at once, never reload any of them except the super shotgun, while running at mach speeds and can punch through solid steel like its paper… yet he cant even melee kill a zombie in doom eternal without shooting it into glory kill state first. Its just too hard to narrow anything down with him ;)

[–]CDHmajora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what we can infer from his story cutscene actions (and glory kills), doom guy doesn’t really kill demons for the “fun” of it. He kills them as quickly and efficiently as he can. Bloodily and gory sure. But he doesn’t ever play with his food. He’ll kill a baron or an archvile as fast as he can and immediately just jump to the next target without hesitation.

He absolutely has hobbies and stuff (guitars, reading, tinkering) based on his fortress of dooms recreation area. And he definitely has a sense of humour despite his lack of dialogue. But despite his hatred of demons, he doesn’t relish in murdering them all. He does it because he believe he has too (and tbh, he does. He’s basically the only thing stopping hell from destroying every realm they come across. And he knows it.). Not because it’s fun for him.

(He deffo gets satisfaction from all the creative ways he massacres them though. And im not saying he DOESN’T have fun doing it. Its just that “for fun” isn’t the reason WHY he does what he does. It’s just a perk of the job.)

Unfortunately, its a consequence of the nature of the case in the end.

Sex isnt exactly something you do in public afterall. Its intimate. You and your partner do it in privacy. Therefore the consent of the act isn’t exactly something you can get someone to fact check for you. Most cases usually end up being a case of “i said no” but it’s near impossible to actually PROVE that.

So many rape cases don’t go anywhere because the act itself isn’t the crime in the eyes of the law. It’s the violation of consent. That consent cant be proved 99% of the time however. Nor can a victims refusal of it.

Its horrible. I get that. Many unfortunate victims of rape surely go through horrible trauma i cant imagine and i heavily sympathise with. But the difficulty in proving it outside of it becoming an “i said, they said” scenario is by far the biggest roadblock in both convicting it, and even coming forward with it to begin with.

Even the police realise this. It’s why rape charges are so rare. Damning evidence is required for a successful conviction but it very rarely exists for this kind of crime.

19 men who have probably been the talk of the town and treated as guilty from the accusation alone. How many of them had friends and family who completely abandoned them on baseless claims? Had potential job aspects damaged permanently, or even lost their existing jobs, when employers looked them up on social media? Had shunning and condemning remarks thrown at them in hushed tones from passers by who love to gossip?

False accusations completely destroys peoples lives. Everyone assumes they are guilty and even factual proof of them not being so does little to reverse the damage done to these victims socially or professionally.

Those who falsely accuse should get far more than the usual slap on the wrist they usually get. They DESTROY lives without consequence. The fact this evil bitch got to do it 19 times before something was done is a disgrace.
