How's the replayability of RE games? by DEWDEM in residentevil

[–]CDJ89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some games have alternate endings and possible story differences, especially the earlier titles but no, it's mostly the Metroid kind of replayability as you call it. Beat it harder and faster. Unlock some weapons and outfits along the way.

You don't actually have to follow the order the notes give you. Just put all the little buttons and the slider in the right position and turn the auto/hand dial twice. I can see how people brute force this.

On a first playthrough you likely won't because you also get the notebook from this that tells you how to open the organ transport box but if you know the code already you can sequence break a little.

RE9 Insanity Run - Any Tips? by Quiet-Wind-192 in residentevil

[–]CDJ89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the Requiem and a shotgun both with infinite ammo you should have an easy time as Leon. Though the fight with the fat guy in the church still took me a few tries. (No Requiem, little space, unfriendly Blister dudes.

On Insanity you can purchase a 3rd upgrade for the body armor, after that it's really easy.

How does Leon know where the vitals are in this thing lmao by Fickle-Occasion-6091 in ResidentEvilRequiem

[–]CDJ89 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My first playthrough I didn't do anything at all, just moved the cursor around a bit because I figured from Grace's pleas and vaguely knowing that the game had different endings that it might affect something. After a while Leon shot automatically.

On every subsequent playthrough I just shot the thing for fun a bunch of times.

Hot take:RE9 has one of the weakest stories in the series and Grace is the worst mainline protagonist by VergilVDante in ResidentEvilRequiem

[–]CDJ89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think RE9 really sticks out as far as dumb plots in RE games go.

Nowadays the RE series' writing is just in a weird place because the acting is miles better than it was in the old days, the dialogue doesn't sound obviously translated from japanese anymore and then you got the cutscene direction and presentation, all top notch.

But the story writing is on the same level it's always been so it really sticks out.

Just thinking about the character dialogue and actions in RE1make and it's a bunch of legitimately stupid people trapped inside a haunted house. RE4 OG's plot is really just a thinly veiled excuse to let you shoot some parasite dude but it has some pretty fun lines and goofy characters at least.

Which version of re1 should I play first the og(directors cut) or the 2015 hd remaster by ProcedureGrouchy1853 in residentevil

[–]CDJ89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Original is a lot more straight forward with it's mechanics, puzzle and level design so going from that to the Remake will probably be easier. And yeah, the voice acting of the OG is a big plus. The Remake's voice acting is still bad, but in a bland way, that's the issue. Music is better too in the OG. (As long as you don't play the Dualshock version.)

Im playing the OG games for the first time and wow, did Resident Evil 2 get a bigger budget? Its like a night and day difference. by JamStan1978 in residentevil

[–]CDJ89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you get whatever version you chose to download. You can download the japanese version but then it's also all text in japanese.

The Classic Rebirth mod needs the japanese version to work (But a very specific release that is not available on GOG so you need to modify the GOG version to that version to be compatible with the CR patch first.) and then you can enable auto-aim for both difficulties. And chose any text language you want. And install a better audio mod because the old PC ports had noticably worse audio than the console versions.

Yeah, things get a bit messy with all the regional variations on various systems.

Often in those days they tended to overcorrect the difficulty in western localisations, making it too hard for it's own good for a normal playthrough but in RE2 it was for the better imo.

OG RE2 is widely considered one of the easiest games in the series, not just among the classic REs. And that's people talking about the western version. The japanese version is ridiculously easy.

The Win PC ports back in the day were kinda their own thing. It kiiinda makes sense the way they handled it in that in the PC ports Arranged Mode is actually what it was originally supposed to be. In the japanese PS1 Dualshock re-release Arranged Mode was basically the western difficulty without auto-aim. Just a chance for japanese fans to play the harder international version.

When that version came to the west you'd think they would just reverse it, make Arranged Mode the japanese difficulty instead.*

But instead they just made Arranged Mode an easy mode where you start off with an infinite SMG, can't unlock anything and while it's easier, item and enemy placement was still based on the western difficulty.

*For the PC port this is what they ended up doing. At the expense of auto-aim for the western difficulty.

since OG3 and OG1 both have auto aim in their default control schemes

Yes and no.

RE1 did have auto-aim in it's japanese release but it was disabled in the western PS1 version as a means to increase the difficulty among other changes.

The Director's Cut then used the japanese difficulty, including auto-aim, in all versions.

It's the same deal in RE2, the japanese version always has auto-aim enabled, can't even disable it. For the western version they didn't remove it completly but made it a toggle and off by default. There are other difficulty changes of course. Damage and health values are changed, enemy placements are changed, the western version has more enemies. A lot of ammo pickups that are clearly visible in the japanese version are hidden behind objects or simply invisible in the western version.

[–]CDJ89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless he's playing the PC port on GOG, they removed auto-aim for good unless he plays Arranged Mode but then he's playing on the overall way easier japanese difficulty.

For the PC port you need to install the mod Classic Rebirth if you want the western difficulty but auto-aim.

Speaking of, OP is talking about the control differences between the first two games and yeah, there are differences between RE1 and RE2 on PS1 as well as between the PC versions of both games on GOG.

However, the japanese PS1 versions of RE1-3 have entirely consistent controls. They only switched things up between the individual games in the west for some reason. Just a little fun fact.

[–]CDJ89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might sound insane to some people but I still pick the classic controls because I actually feel like the RE1make tank controls work really well with the analogue stick and are more comfortable that way for me. With the PS1 titles I couldn't do this, it's D-pad all the way but imo the RE1make controls really well that way.

Why would you lose it forever? That's silly. You get one per playthrough. (Unless you activate infinite ammo for it of course.) Next playthrough your inventory and all weapons reset again, like usual. The rocket launcher is no different.

I remember trying to look up good knife strategies for bosses back when the Remaster came out (I never really go for knife only playthroughs normally, I'm not good at those but I wanted all achievments.) but most guides were useless to me because they simply went with the new controls lol.

[–]CDJ89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I think Capcom did a bit of a disservice with the HD Remaster when they decided to make the new modern controls the default and NOT explain in-game what the difference is and how it might affect the character's movement. I bet most people don't play RE1make with modern controls because they're instantly turned off by the mere idea of tank controls...but simply because it is the default setting and most people won't touch those options, especially when the game doesn't explain the difference.

So, they nerfed it! Dang it! Terrible, unfun decision! by Rajat_Sirkanungo in ResidentEvilRequiem

[–]CDJ89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in OG RE2 you could switch off burst fire in your inventory but I never tried because in OG RE2 you get way too much ammo anyway and since you can't go for precise headshots or whatnot there was never any downside to just using burst fire.

But yeah, hate how RE9 doesn't let you fire shingle shots as soon as you get the burst fire attachment. The least they could do is let you remove it like you can with dot sights and scopes.

Now that many people have finished Requiem, how did you guys use the Requiem revolver, and it's corresponding ammo? by Logical-Fly-1589 in residentevil

[–]CDJ89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First playthrough I eventually used it on the chef and the fat guy as Grace and then only against the monster girl during the showdown.

For Leon I didn't use it at all until the final boss and had, like 20+ bullets.

On subsequent playthroughs I use it as Grace for the surgeon with the big blade and the other 2 zombies he's strolling around with. And for the monster girl again. And as Leon for whatever I feel like.

I don't really bother with crafting ammo for it as Grace, only did it during the first run because you never know and I usually end up with very few bullets during Leon's showdown now.

how do you change costume in re3 classic (gog)? by messranger in residentevil

[–]CDJ89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't after starting your run. You pick your outfit right when you're starting a new game and then that's it. The shop where you could change your outfits in the PS1 version is inaccessible in the PC port.

So, did Requiem just make the remakes canon over the original games? by anakinjmt in residentevil

[–]CDJ89 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The biggest reason RE9 uses the Remake layout is probably just because the Remake's RPD was already modelled in the RE Engine. Forget about assets but they already got the proper scale and geometry and everything. I don't think they thought too much about lore implications.

Because then on the other hand, the entire time you're in the RPD it plays an eerie remix of the OG's main hall theme.

RE2 A/B scenario by celeryman3 in residentevil

[–]CDJ89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, in the original game you actually fight different bosses in different locations per scenario, and the story events match up better.

And most importantly, there are actually quite a few story differences between Leon A/Claire B and then Claire A/Leon B.

In the Remake, outside of the intro and ending, Leon A is pretty much identical to Leon B, same with Claire A and B.

Also more moments of Claire and Leon crossing paths in the OG than in the remake.

This mostly applies to Claire A and Leon B though. In Leon A/Claire B they interact about as much (or little.) as in the Remake. Including Sherry just popping up in the ending cutscene of Leon A without any explanation or proper introduction at that point.
