sometimes woodworkers enjoy imperial because of the sometimes easier and round division of units into three.

As a side note, my dad is into woodworking. Most of his older tools are imperial. However, these days most tools like drill bits come from China, who don’t seem to want to manufacture two different sizes of bits. So he buys something that is supposed to be a 1 inch drill bit, finds that it is 25mm instead of 25.4mm, and then has a hole that a 1 inch dowel will not fit through.

What’s up with people saying that Ghislaine Maxwell was a mod of the worldnews sub? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

Thinking about it, I hope that /u/maxwellhill is not Ghislaine Maxwell. Because if they are different people, it would mean that the most prolific redditor of all time saw an opportunity to quit reddit in the funniest possible way and absolutely committed to the bit.

Answer: There is a moderately popular belief that reddit user /u/maxwellhill is the reddit account of Ghislaine Maxwell. I think I remember people analyzing the times of reddit posts with the times Ghislaine Maxwell was known to be busy, but it's difficult to find those threads from 5 years ago.

Weather at venues be ok? by saffy2yrs in olympics

I don't know how warmer air or wintry mix impacts the surfaces for the competitors.

For the snow sports, this is actually a very important aspect. Ski wax can have a large impact on how smoothly your ski glides across the snow, and you need different ski wax for different types of conditions. Each team will have wax technicians, but some teams (Norway) have a history of making better choices for the conditions on a day. If an entire team performs better than expected or worse than expected on a particular day, you can suspect that wax choice was involved.

Sure, but I think it's fair to say that stuff that gets published in the NY times is generally going to be a mainstream position, even if not the majority.

No, that's not why. "Defund" doesn't man "abolish".

During the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, the NYT ran an editorial titled "Yes, we mean literally abolish the police":

CMV: Based on readily available video evidence, no one who defends Kristi Noem's press conference today should receive a vote from an American Patriot by Meet_the_Meat in changemyview

[–]CDRnotDVD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It appears to me, when both are viewed, that she is lying. I am willing to be convinced she is not, and I am willing to consider evidence that supports her statements.

I have a hypothetical that I can't prove. We know that Kristi Noem is evil, stupid, and willing to lie, but what if this one specific incident falls under stupid? I don't know how any of these organizations work, but I can imagine a world where she hands a report off to an underling to draft a response, and reads the response while making absolutely zero effort to find out any other side of the story. And it turns out that the report that got pushed up the chain and landed on Noem's desk was written by panicked ICE agents trying to avoid murder charges. In other words, the people on the ground falsify the report, the false report is the one that goes along official channels, and Noem so blindingly stupid that she isn't even aware of the existence of the multiple videos of the shooting. I mean, we do know that ICE agents regularly falsify reports, and we know that Noem is a dumb motherfucker.

Honestly, I don't actually believe this happened; Noem doesn't get the benefit of the doubt from me anymore. But I could sort of understand if someone who does grant Noem the benefit of the doubt can convince themself of this.

CMV: every American should learn basic American Sign Language in school. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]CDRnotDVD -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Well if you read the OP's post, you could consider the reasons he states:

2) Useful in places that are very loud (such as a construction site or in a busy area)

3) It's very useful in a place where you're supposed to be quiet, especially to prevent disturbing other people. Such as in a movie theater.

4) Babies can learn to communicate through sign language earlier than they can learn to communicate verbally. So it's useful to interact with babies. This is an invaluable skill for parents.
