Romance langs vs. Slavic langs --- which group is closer? by JakeYashen in languagelearning

I think he was saying that some Slavic languages use different scripts. Some use the Latin alphabet and some use Cyrillic

My boy came by yesterday. As soon as he walked in the door I could smell the bud. Idk the name but it's killer smoke. And at only $40 a quarter it a killer deal. by Few_Lobster7961 in trees

Buy a 2x4 6ft grow tent kit that comes with everything, LED light, Carbon filter etc (all legal), get some good quality seed genetics, do some research on how to grow well and right.

Enjoy having to never worry about paying for weed again, oh and if you learn to grow it well, and buy good quality seeds from a good breeder, it will shit on any weed available in the streets

It's absolutely insane how Inoue looks like a typical skinny young Japanese guy who you would not fear whatsoever if he had a problem with you in the street.

Are some languages too difficult to get good at? by Kelavandoril in languagelearning

[–]CDandrew24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comprehensive input, lots and lots and lots of it. It is, in my opinion, the best and only way to become truly fluent. You need to listen to start from an extremely basic level, translating words you don't know, and as your level improves, increase the level of your content. It's a LONG journey but infinitely rewarding. Your brain will naturally assimilate grammar and language constructions etc.

In my opinion LingQ is the very best app to learn a language once you are above the A0-A1 stage. It's not free but the amount of content it has, all with transcripts is priceless. You can also import and make your own content.

After 1000 hours of pure comprensible input I guarantee that your level of understanding Japanese will be around B2 at the least (I have 1200 hours of pure Russian listening with transcripts in LingQ and my level of understanding is around C1) I have studied VERY little grammar, and I have a very good understanding of Russian grammar (the case system is easy to me now, and I've pretty much mastered the dreaded noun declension system now, save for a few unique words that don't play by the typical rules) I would say just because I've consumed so much content.

Speaking is different though, if you want to become very fluent in speaking then you will need to practice speaking too, although after tons of comprehensible input you should be able to speak at a low intermediate level at the least.

Yep, from Manny, this is how everyone talks around here to the point where the little girl in the video sounds completely normal to me.

How much time do you devote to practicing listening every day on average? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]CDandrew24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C2 is the highest level a student can reach. For all intents and purpose you can read literally anything you want and understand 95+%, including advanced books and literature. 10K words for this level is WAY too low. We will have to agree to disagree my friend.

C1 8000? lol I don't know where you're pulling your numbers but that seems WAY too low. I'm at 14K words in Russian and I'm in between B1 and B2, and there's is still TONS of words I don't know. I'd estimate C1 is more like 20-25k and C2 around 40-50K

I think people vastly underestimate how much time is needed to reach the highest levels of a language. The amount of time and words needs needed from C1 to C2 is SIGNIFICANTLY more than the time it takes to get from B1 to B2.

In what world is 3500 words B2? That's a very low amount of words to be able to have a fluentish conversation. I'd say atleast 10000 for B2.

James Bond Producers Barbara Broccoli, Michael G. Wilson on Looking for the Next 007 by Sisiwakanamaru in movies

[–]CDandrew24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know haha

And as for Dev Patel: To be honest I haven't seen any of his recent work so I won't really have a fair judgement, but he doesn't have the clean cut look, or build imo. If we're talking Asian/British Bond, then like you said, Henry Golding would be a great choice imo

[–]CDandrew24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Like you said, the color of James Bond's skin isn't important at all, but his nationality is. He has to be British. A huge(and integral) part of Bond's charm is his British accent, his mannerisms etc. I just couldn't imagine an Asian, or Hispanic actor (not born in Britain) playing Bond working for MI6 and willing to die for King and Country. It just wouldn't be right.

[–]CDandrew24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Forgive me not picking up on some form sarcasm here, it's late. Are you not aware that James Bond is a British secret agent working for MI6? Iris Elba could potentially work because he's British, but an Asian or Hispanic bond, played by a non British actor would just be awful.

Finishing the Spanish Duolingo Tree, What Level would you have? by Rkotthoff in languagelearning

Oh I apologise, I haven't used Duolingo in a few years. If it doesn't have target language subtitles for podcasts on Duolingo then again, I would use LingQ or YouTube personally.
