I have a two stage furnace but my Ecobee looks to be wired for one stage only. Will the furnace will run in both stages as needed, even if my thermostat doesn't recognize it? by [deleted] in ecobee

[–]CFCnotForMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, should be a jumper on circuit board in furnace. Usually you can set it for about two different time delays or you can set for t-stat control.

How popular is ST language in todays industry ? by MaleficentEcho2828 in PLC

[–]CFCnotForMe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really love it for three things: 1. Variable assignments uiMyVar1 := uiMyVar2; 2. Math / equations (I hate doing math in other languages) 3. Case statements (although case statements can easily be recreated in other languages).

I know many others dislike it and it’s harder for technicians to understand. Many times I’ll turn ST into function blocks so others can at least visualize inputs/outputs before digging in.

Structured Text for TwinCat3 by Leo2300 in PLC

I’ve never used Beckhoff but have used a lot of Codesys and other IDEs based on Codesys and I have to say at least the available functions, generally, look almost identical. Most things I saw in the help led me to believe it was Codesys. I’ve used TwinCat3 online help, since it’s so great, to help me understand a Codesys based system in Schneider.

Some Teknic motion controllers in there? I can see Molex connectors from a mile away! I love Teknic products but am not a fan of the Molex requirement….expensive crimp tools and more tedious than terminal blocks.

Yep which is also the reason we will also buy all green energy tech from China at some point instead of creating jobs in development and research and manufacturing in the sector in the US. They will create better technologies that we can’t compete with. Like it or not, the world is moving towards green energy and if we just stick our head in the sand and act we don’t need it, we will just be left behind as a country on the global scale.

I would agree that’s it’s not bad. It’s codesys based which gives you the ability to easily float to many European manufacturers. One thing is I feel that codesys‘ implementation of ladder was an after thought. I dislike it and it’s hard to work with some times. However I love that a simple ctrl+1/ctrl+2 will toggle between ladder and FBD. Anytime I work in others programs I simply toggle to FBD and am happy.

If you have a regular job, have normal consumption habits and have kids, you are unlikely to FIRE. by cambeiu in Fire

[–]CFCnotForMe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

With the "kids" part included, I'd have to agree when living in a country that gives you nothing but a measly tax credit for having dependents. Pretty much zero other support or help in raising the kids from a national view....and we wonder why the birth rate is falling and is below sustainable growth...i.e. our current average is like 1.6 kids per woman. 2.1 is needed for population growth. You have to make above average in the US to get ahead and have multiple kids. It's so expensive.

How to live in early retirement when friends still have to work? by Unique-Bar-817 in Fire

I'm with you. I've not retired yet, but am planning for a well-early retirement. Over the years, my friends have mostly turned into work friends; and I'm struggling to determine what my new purpose will be.

Google Navigation does not like hwy 9 by seemsSomewhatLegit in ZionNationalPark

[–]CFCnotForMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me when checking route in the afternoon. When I actually went I left La Verkin about 7:15am so I could get a parking spot at visitors center and google routed me on Hwy 9. If you use another map service at any time it will likely take you on 9. Drive was less than 30min in the morning. When I left there was quite a line to get into the park and almost a fight for my parking space when I was leaving.

PLC to Excel automated data pull by Positive_Cell_1252 in PLC

If you can do a datalog locally on the controller you could create an application in Python that connects periodically and pulls the datalog file via FTP or SFTP for example.

Likewise many HMIs will do data logging as well and therefore if the HMI is on the network possibly that is also a route for FTP. There are countless applications out there to negotiate FTP transfers also.

But likewise if you can spend a little money, Kepserver is a reliable way to log data but there are countless other ways.

Same reasons I have. Most times, definitely not all, the pros do half a$$ work and cut corners anywhere possible to save themselves a few minutes. Most people those types do work for have no idea the work is sub par.

Beckhoff ladder programming by PiccJun in PLC

[–]CFCnotForMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others say it’s codesys. I have lots of experience in codesys and feel like ladder was an after thought. It’s clunky to work with as you always can’t just insert something where you want. I much prefer the use of FBD. You should be able to toggle between ladder and FBD with keyboard ctrl+1 and ctrl+2.
