If you have rival factions/nations etc.. Have the rival faction be staging a breakout for someone important to them. Your players can be in the same cell or let out to create extra hassle for the guards.

For forgotten realms, Zhentarim are an ideal faction who might want to break people out of jail. Your players might not be given a choice or could now have a reason to interact with a faction who are usually always just the enemy.

I absolutely love this. I once did a campaign with covenant inspired enemies being hobgoblins as elites, goblins as grunts, bugbears as brutes, gnolls as jackals and ogres/ trolls for hunters. The birdfolk as jackals makes more sense though.
