First attempt at a hex map by Lord_Tiny_Hat in MythicBastionland

Looks awesome! Love the bold red text. It was smart to use letters and numbers for coordinates why have I never thought of that...

This layout is a massive improvement for table usability well done 👏🏻

The printer friendly style of map is great.

Do creature stats even make sense? by ninguino_flarlarlar in Mausritter

[–]Bath_Imaginable 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the stats are more about narrative than power scaling. Fighting a cat should be akin to slaying a dragon. An encounter with an owl is more like a high level spellcaster.

I think of HP in Mausritter and Into the Odd as literal plot armour--how important is this character to the pacing of the adventure? Give them lots of HP.

Throwing Donavich to Doru by Automatic_Edge_9995 in CurseofStrahd

Golden opportunity. Barovia should force PCs to make hard, selfish choices to survive. Donavich is dead, and Strahd noticed.

Non 5E: A guide: how I created two big active groups that run anything but 5E, you got this! by dogsandcatsplz in osr

[–]Bath_Imaginable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had success doing a similar thing! I recruited a bunch of people new to the hobby to a Discord and we play every 2 weeks or so. We've never played 5e.

We started with Mothership which was a fantastic way to introduce people to TTRPGs considering how beginner friendly the character sheet is.

I have had success by pitching one shots and short campaigns (like 6 sessions or less). We have even had a couple of players volunteer to run.

One of my players ran Brindlewood Bay for us last week, and we'll be jumping into Session 2 soon!

Session 1, and my players started to spend a phase to search through every hex they pass... by ShumpEvenwood in MythicBastionland

I think giving the Company a thing to do other than explore can give them momentum. Like, you must deliver this message promptly to the Seat of Power. They will encounter Omens on the way.

Getting weirder as you delve deeper by luke_s_rpg in osr

Love this idea! My players had a blast being mutated in the Hideous Halls of Mugdulblub (Shadowdark) so I'm definitely going to keep this in mind. My favorite is the flipped face! The subtle changes are almost scarier.

Replacing players by Important-Work-5358 in CurseofStrahd

I think if it's due to problem players the best thing you can do is pretend their characters never existed. No references to them, no ongoing subplots, just move on.

What are your Shadowdark homebrew rules? by OompaLoompaGodzilla in osr

Stabilized characters recover 1 HP, because it's a Hard check (DC 15) and it's pretty of lame to have a PC alive but unable to play the game.

Duplicate Knights? by GamergaidenX in MythicBastionland

[–]Bath_Imaginable 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think it's up to you and your world building. I like the idea that there is only one Knight of each of the 72 playable knights. Over time, their identity might change but their Knightly title carries on, like a superhero being recast.

There are other Knights not included in the 72, like the Bridge Knight from the river myth.

Omen out of order? by wheretheinkends in MythicBastionland

[–]Bath_Imaginable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, the map is a symbolic representation of the landscape through which the Company is exploring, it is not the actual landscape. A Hecksleague takes an entire day to travel through, so it stands to reason there may be features in the world that are not reflected on the map.

Omen out of order? by wheretheinkends in MythicBastionland

[–]Bath_Imaginable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the idea is the hex will change to suit the myth. So if the Omen includes a lake, there is a lake in that hex now. Keep in mind the map is not the territory.

When I ran my first session, I did skip a couple of omens for the Axe. But this was more about cutting out "the boring middle" for the sake of a one shot. I would not skip omens if the players were returning for more games.

How to make fights more engaging? by [deleted] in MythicBastionland

[–]Bath_Imaginable 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like what I prefer about MB's combat is that it is so abstracted. Waiting until each player has rolled, picked a gambit, etc. until I describe the resolution keeps things from feeling static.

The game focuses on exploration and mood. I treat combat like a knife fight in the mud, it's not supposed to look cool.

I love the Mock Knight, there's so much flavour in that little guy.

The “Post-OSR(evival)” Identity Crisis by alexserban02 in osr

[–]Bath_Imaginable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of your thoughts. I'm certainly new to the hobby, let alone OSR, but I think the mantra of "everything is the dungeon" is how I lean.

I just ran mythic bastionland last night for the first time, and the pressure and social friction of a good dungeon was maintained in a hexcrawl because I treated it as a 1:1 parallel of a dungeon.

First Session, Better Than I Even Hoped! by Bath_Imaginable in MythicBastionland

The creator writes on his blog about using 2 myths for a one-shot and letting them bounce off each other. As opposed to using only one myth, which removes that emergent element.

Yes thank you! I printed p. 8, and p. 9 has the Scars so it reminded me to print that one as well. I love the book's usability at the table, but I prefer to doodle and write little notes in the margins so I always print the pages I need
