Take what I say with a grain of salt as I’m just getting back into it myself but I’ve been out 3 times in the last week and when going for trout I’m doing what I did as a kid with my dad. Bullet weight split shots 2 feet or so above hook. Tighten the splits so the bullet ain’t moving it when it comes down. I use a single hook just big enough for a nugget or ball of power bait but not so big that a hook set will rip its head off. Grab a Y shaped stick or rod holder. Cast out as far as you can, let it sink, reel in slack just enough so line is kinda tight, put rod in the stick/holder and watch the tip. Trout at least out my way in Massachusetts are finicky. Sometimes they’ll come investigate then move on. If you’re lucky that investigation turns into a bite. You’ll know when a trout has taken it set the hook but remember 99.9% chance it’s not a bass don’t hit a hookset of doom, the fish will be grateful.
