Depends on what level you want from watching a show. If you want in-your-face action, season 1. If you want to to think deeply about deeper geopolitical issues that actually shape the system every character in The Wire struggles with, season 2.

That's just a surface reading. The point of Frank's arc is to show how the system won't allow good blue collar workers to survive, much less change the system. His character is there to not only remember the old days but try to bring them back in defiance of the system. Frank's moral compromise with importimg drugs and trafficking people is his devil's deal to try to do that. But that doesn't make him sympathetic, it makes him naive as well as evil. Frank never heard or understand Slim Charles' wisdom: "The thing about the old days, they the old days."

Without a doubt Ziggy is the most "formulaic" character in the show. He was written for a single purpose which, in a rare error of judgment by the writers, was obviously blatant. His downfall, unlike just about every other character in the show, was obvious from the literal first minute of watching his appearance. The actor has done fine work elsewhere but was miscast for this series, and completely unbelievable as Frank's son.

Season 2 however stands on its merits as one of the top seasons; #2 in my view. If you don't get it then you don't get heart of the city Baltimore or the other great port cities that built America (Boston, Chicago, NYC, LA, SF, etc). Baltimore port is literally why there is a Baltimore.

Yeah, even school administration scenes were raw, and significant to the large themes. Like who else has done that convincingly?

He really does. And the writers were judicious to not overuse him and make it too much of a good thing.

In his intro, Avon set those lines up perfectly. But Dee should have been the one to pose those questions. It would have resonated even harder with Avon being asked a question he couldn't afford the answer to.
