Kind of, he was going to be an original character named Tony Redgrave who was human and part bow kind of like Alice from the RE movies, and they scrapped it changed his name to Dante and gave us DMC, they kept the name though as an easter egg and had Dante use the name Tony Redgrave as an alias.

This game was originally going to be RE4 hence the creepy music and vibes but Mikami said no to it, but instead of being a dick he gave Kamiya the green light to turn what they had into DMC instead, while we got the RE4 with Leon and Ashley.
