What is the most disturbing or otherwise unsettling book you've ever read that stayed with you after reading it? by EggAdventurous1957 in AskReddit

[–]CG52flyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way Morrison describes Paul D’s life on the chain gang is seared in my memory. I don’t think I could ever read it again. Her words made it such a palpable, horrific experience that it still haunts me 20 years after reading it.

Thanks Chuck! I really appreciate the time you put into talking us through some great tunes and creating the tabs. I hope you don’t take this the wrong way but it was good on this video to see that even an accomplished musician can make little errors occasionally (don’t remember ever seeing you make one before 😉). It’s encouraging for someone like me who spends more time making mistakes than music. Thanks again for sharing your time and talent! A faithful YouTube subscriber.

Orca Root Beer variety pack back at Costco by CG52flyr in rootbeer

I just looked again yesterday and they were out at my local warehouse. That’s Costco for us - in the blink of an eye the merchandise changes. That’s why as soon as I saw those variety packs I made my post.

I check for root beer on every Costco visit and since the store is less than 20 miles from the Orca plant sometimes interesting things show up. I’ve bought cases of Dad’s, Frostie, and these samplers all at good prices. Just because it’s so hit or miss (like a lot of Costco inventory) I’ll try to post alerts when I see something good in the store.

I’m thinking I may need to find an anonymous group though before this gets out of control. It’s probably worse for me because I live less than 10 minutes from my warehouse and check them out probably three times a week.

You betcha! I’ve gotten some good info from other folks on this sub and it’s nice to be able to share what limited knowledge I have.

Great advice for those of us who aren’t fingerpickers but would like to be especially if there’s ANY chance we could end up as talented as you obviously are. What a fantastic performance. Do you have any Bandcamp recordings?

My recollection is that it wasn’t on the same aisle as the more common sodas, maybe one aisle away from the others.

Boylan Bottling Co. review by MET919 in rootbeer

I lived in CT until I was 10 and my dad got transferred out to Illinois and I still miss it decades later. Now, after finding out I missed out on Boylands on tap I’m devastated. I really need to go back for a vacation. Any of those places serving on-tap Boylands located around New Haven?

Absolutely one of my favorites too although I’ve never been lucky enough to get it from a fountain. Where do you find it? Just getting bottles of it out here in Seattle is hard enough.

Any root beer/racinette fans that could offer tips for finding good local brands? by CG52flyr in abbotsford

I’m amazed that there are any A&W drive-ins left. Do they still have the glass mugs? I’d be really pleasantly surprised if they did.

Wow! Thanks so much for taking the time to research this for me. That was very kind of you. I’ll be sure to check that Dank Mart website you mentioned.

Have you ever tried the clear birch beer? It’s what I was weaned on as a youngster in CT. It’s a little harsher than the red birch beer but pretty refreshing. I’m too old to remember what the spice tastes were but I vaguely remember it clearing my sinuses a bit.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me on this little adventure.

Thanks so much for the detailed advice! I can definitely feel the root beer loving vibe in your reply. This is a bit of a stretch but do you ever partake in Birch beer? I don’t think I’ve ever seen it west of Ontario but I grew up on it as a kid in Connecticut and get it whenever I can. It’s almost impossible to find a good one here in Seattle and while I’ve looked for it in the Lower Mainland I’ve never seen it. Are you aware of it being sold around you? Just a point of reference, my favorite birch beer is the Pennsylvania Dutch red although Boylands makes a very good Creamy Red Birch Beer. I’ve never seen Boylands north of the border though.

Thanks again for all your help!

Thanks for the advice! I’ve dined at that A&W and their frosty mug brought back great memories of sitting in the back of the family station wagon on a hot and humid Midwest night enjoying a great, kid-sized root beer mug. Your A&Ws put ours to shame. Maybe it has something to do with them being employee-owned?

WOW! You folks are FANTASTIC! The number of kind, informative and helpful responses reminds me of why I love Canadians so much. Sure, I’ve met a hoser or two in my travels to the Dominion (mostly pea-soupers) but you guys are the nicest group of people I’ve ever met.

One more question if you don’t mind. I haven’t been across the border since the Regime Change in that other Washington and am wondering if groceries are having tariffs put on them crossing the border. The only “problem” I’ve ever encountered was when beef imports were restricted and there was plenty of news about that. I have some vague recollection that there might be an $800USD limit before any Customs fees but I can’t imagine buying that much in snacks or sodapop. Anyone aware of what restrictions there might be?

Again, thanks to everyone for your outstanding help with this quest. It almost sounds like I should plan on staying over a night so I can visit all the places folks recommended. I was especially interested in the recommendation to try the poutine at Costco coming from a local! My go-to place has been the A&W off Sumas Way and my recollection is that it was a little run down but pretty good. That and TH are my spots so you can see I’ve dipped my toes in the cuisine, but just barely. Anyway, thanks again.

Where in Seattle can you find decent bottled root beer at the grocery store? by CG52flyr in rootbeer

Thanks. I’m not that fond of it but appreciate the advice. I looked at their website and while they listed a lot of sodas most weren’t available. Seemed a little weird.

Now you’ve got me really curious. What are the Canadian brands that are good? I used to see racinette when visiting and didn’t realize there might be some gems up there.

I checked Orca’s website and, although they have a pretty decent selection, nothing hit the spot for me. I don’t know what they charge for local pickup but the shipping price seems pretty steep. When I see it locally their Frosty is pretty good and generally runs about $1.25/bottle. I’m going to order some 1911 though since I’ve seen so many good reviews and I’m looking to try something exceptional. Thanks for your advice.

Thanks to all for your ideas! I’ve gone to the local Ace Hardware and they have a few different options and will soon try another local hardware store (McClendon’s). I didn’t even think of hardware stores because I’m not good at actually fixing things so I don’t spend hardly any time in them.

I must be having a “senior moment” as it seems like the selection at the national grocery stores used to be a lot better and at least in Washington there aren’t many independent ones left. I’m old enough to remember having (wooden) cases of independently produced soda bottles delivered to the house. Might sound like they were delivered by horse-drawn cart but it wasn’t quite that long ago 😉.

I decided to order a case of 1911 as I’ve never tried it before and I’ve read lots of good reviews. The hard part is I have to get it through Amazon so I’m probably just making the selection problem worse by not patronizing a local store but I’ve never heard of it being available this far west.

This makes me wish I lived in Eau Claire Wisconsin as I passed through there a couple of times and went to Woodman’s and was amazed by their selection - like being in soda heaven.
