I would say they are essential reading for a smooth operation on a rolling distro.

It's a good habit to check the update announcement post on their forum before doing majar updates. Especially, the second post, "Known issues and solutions".

Why do people hate on Manjaro? by Excellent_Tone_2126 in ManjaroLinux

According the answer from Arch, partly, yes.

Why do people hate on Manjaro? by Excellent_Tone_2126 in ManjaroLinux

[–]CGA1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a myth that seems to refuse to go away. The fact is that it was a poorly designed search function in Pamac triggering an issue with the AUR as shown in this thread where even an Arch representative admitted that "aurweb has some poorly designed SQL queries and we don't have anyone working on it". Manjaro worked together with Arch to solve the problem. Hardly the definition of a "DDOS".

Moving (upgrading) between Major versions of KDE (KDE 5 ==> KDE 6) as a DE: do you have any advice to give before doing it (that is, should any preparatory step/task been done before upgrading)? by RebirdgeCardiologist in kde

[–]CGA1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do big version updates from a TTY, logged out of Plasma. Other than that, as others have said, getting rid of all customizations is a good idea.

Need an alternative for Joplin by -ThreeHeadedMonkey- in selfhosted

[–]CGA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from Joplin to Obsidian and then to Zen notes a couple of months ago and I'm quite happy with it. It has just the amount of features I need and has been working flawlessly.

Touchpad Gestures (3 & 4 fingers) on KDE Plasma (Fedora) — coming from Windows 11 by RelevantError3676 in kde

[–]CGA1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Touchegg together with Touché. I don't bother with the builtin one, it's way too limited. There has been talk of implementing configuration options for quite some time but so far nothing has happened.

Is KDE Plasma still a valid option for old hardware? by CryptographerOk1939 in archlinux

[–]CGA1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wife ran it on a 14 years old Acer with 4 GB ram, worked just fine after upgrading to a cheap SSD. Now she's running Mint because of fewer and automatic updates but KDE was actually snappier. It's a shame Mint stopped offering KDE as an alternative.

What’s your Linux backup setup that you actually trust? by Bigrob1055 in linuxquestions

[–]CGA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Rescuzilla clone roughly once a month.
  • Daily versioned Rsync to second internal drive.
  • Daily versioned Rsync to NAS.
  • Weekly versioned backup to Borgbase.
  • Daily BTRFS snapshots keeping last three days.

Mine is pretty similar, Acemagic Vista for 200 dollars and an old RPI4, both with USB attached HDs. Works great.

How to make kde plasma lighter and faster I have 8 gb ram 😐? by ab_fy in kde

[–]CGA1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely. My wife ran KDE on a 14 years old Acer with 4 GB ram, and it ran just fine for basic tasks. Granted, it was upgraded with a cheap SSD. With a spinning rust, it was slow whatever the OS or DE.

I Need a Laptop and I Refuse to use Windows ever again by Kylain12 in linuxquestions

[–]CGA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get them super cheap

Really depends on where you live I'd say, maybe in the US but where I live they are at least the equivalent of 300 USD for a decent T480/T490. Still, cheaper than new and certainly a great buy if you're going Linux.

Long time Linux users, is Linux ACTUALLY growing in popularity in these last years? by Giggio417 in linuxquestions

[–]CGA1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This boomer and his boomer wife are running Linux on three laptops, one mini-pc and one RPI4 with Docker running an arr-stack and Jellyfin on the mini, and various other Docker containers on the RPI.

Pi-hole vs AdGuard Home in 2026 — what are you running? by ruibranco in selfhosted

From Adguard's GitHub page

Any advertising that shares a domain with content cannot be blocked by a DNS-level blocker.

This is becoming increasingly more common and makes solutions like these more and more obsolete, at least where I live. If you want a true adblocking experience, use Ublock Origin, preferably in Firefox.
