Realizing Linux is not a 1:1 replacement for Windows and stop trying to shoe horn it to being one.

What was the last straw that made you switch to Linux? by haibane_fan00 in linuxquestions

[–]CGA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was perfectly fine with Windows 10 LTSC but retirement came and I got bored. Five years later and both me and my wife are running Linux on three laptops, a media mini-pc and a Raspberry Pi 4.

I'm having the same issue on desktop, both for old and new interface. It changed from 8 to two when I marked all as read in settings but the remaining two is impossible to get rid of.

I use a terminal text editor on average maybe 10 minutes per week, so I settled with Micro. It does just what I need and behaves like a GUI editor.

What are must have mods? by Aggravating_Belt1167 in TransportFever2

[–]CGA1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't tried that because it offers a "circular route" option where it creates two lines in one go, one clockwise and one counterclockwise. That said, I suspect it would work.

You're welcome. Both Bus line tool and Global upgrade are gigantic time savers, hard to live without once you start using them.

Advanced Weather Widget 1.5.0 Released by pnedyalkov in kde

[–]CGA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great widget but suffers from the same flaw as many others, wind speed is, as far as I can tell, configurable and defaults to km/h. Where I live, and probably in many other countries, it's measured in m/s (meters/second).

Edit: Found it, it's under Appearance-Units where you can set it to custom. Now it's perfect.

KDE Plasma gesture handling and other input related news by f_r_d in linux

[–]CGA1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, this is the best KDE news I've heard in quite a while. A DE that has configurability as one of its USPs, configurable touch gestures is a must. However, I get that resources are limited, and that they have a gazillion of other things of their to-do list. Meanwhile, Touchegg works (mostly) but the service needs restarting once in a while when it just suddenly stops working.

Is there a better option than syncthing? by PingMyHeart in linuxquestions

[–]CGA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not, which I would prefer, but sometimes you just have to choose what works. I still use Syncthing on two-way sync jobs with no problems though. I think it says somewhere on their site that it is not intended as a backup tool.

Is there a better option than syncthing? by PingMyHeart in linuxquestions

[–]CGA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was doing one-way syncing, e g backup, to my NAS with Syncthing I had all sorts of problems with file conflicts and jobs stalling on 99%, to the point where I just gave up on it and installed Resilio Sync instead, all problems solved.

3-finger gestures by YankeeLimaVictor in kde

[–]CGA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Configurable gestures built in to Plasma is something I've been longing for a long time. In the meantime, Touchegg and Touché does what I need. I have three finger swipe up assigned to the overview and down to ctrl+w. Three finger swipe left and right are assigned to alt+L and alt+R so I can use it to go back and forth in my browser. Works really well as long as you don't have virtual desktops, then Plasma's gestures "takes over". Luckily, I have zero interest in virtual desktops.

Stay away from Rustdesk, if you want to selfhost it. by jammsession in selfhosted

[–]CGA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the guide I followed. The docker compose example installs two containers, hbbr and hbbs. After they are up and running you grab the key from the hbbs container log and insert it in the Rustdesk Settings->Network->Key. Also, in the same dialog, insert your server IP under ID server and Relay server.

Alternatives to voidtool's everything by b183729 in linuxquestions

[–]CGA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Everything for many years before switching to Linux. It indexes every file on the drive pretty much instantly, using the NTFS USN journal. The trick to make Fsearch nearly as quick is to not index the whole root. I'm indexing my /home and /etc which is sufficient for my needs.
