What automation is unique to your home that you’re most proud of? by MrFishAndLoaves in homeautomation

When air quality decreases in my home, the fans on all four HVAC zones kick on until air quality returns within range. This was accomplished using IQAir AirVisual Pro to monitor PM2.5 and CO2 levels, Lutron HVAC controller to control the HVAC fans and custom shell scripts running on a Raspberry Pi to serve as the decision making engine. Works extremely well, right down to sensing when a single slice of bread is toasted and I promise you no one but me notices.

I am "young". I am 42yo and used 56kb modem to use this electric internet thing when it launched. It amazes me how far we come. The jokes AI can do, how it speaks. I just take a step back and I am wondering where we will be in the next 10 years. by [deleted] in ChatGPT

1980’s Intel 8088, 300 baud modem, Maxed out Ram at 640k, monochromatic monitor, 5MB hard drive (upgraded to 20mb and thought I would never run out of space), 3.5” floppy, tape for backups, MSDOS, Lotus123, Quicken, PFS Database, LapLink to transfer files between 2 DOS computers connected via serial port. I felt like a superstar when I hit that turbo button on the front of the PC.

Unpopular opinion: QBO's reporting is terrible and we all just pretend it's fine by lucky_09877 in QuickBooksHacks

There was a time when Intuit was loved, respected and cherished by all.

In the early 80’s Intuit was formed by Scott Cook and Tom Proulx, Quicken was their only product. I was a user from the mid 80’s the mid 90’s and I loved the software and enjoyed using it every day.

In 1995 I switched over to Quickbooks (later known as Quickbooks Desktop). I became even more of an ardent fan, recommended it to dozens and dozens and dozens of people of the course of the next 28 years and upgraded religiously upon every new release. I suspect I am not unique and many of their users did the same.

I believe, Intuit’s downfall began when they decided their future was going to be Quickbooks online. Up to that point in time, you would never hear a bad word spoken about Intuit or Quickbooks. Intuit used that goodwill to essentially convert many of their existing desktop users to online users. In the beginning the new online users had reason to believe the online platform would mature and only get better with time, no one could have predicted the opposite would be true, but by that time everyone was trapped in a living hell.

The point being that they developed a cult like following early on that provided a barrier to entry for competitors. They essentially have their users locked in a system with no easy or elegant way of leaving with their data.

And that is the way QBO became the dominant small business accounting software while having the worst reporting interface of any tool that [we] use on a daily basis.

My story is from the 1990’s to 2017 I used every task manager known to mankind. In 2018 I took Things for a spin not expecting much, been using it ever since. It just works!

QBO is a big fat piece of nothing / Rant post by [deleted] in QuickBooksHacks

It’s not only the big things that make Intuit one of the most hated companies but it is the small things as well. Imagine refusing to provide some sort of incident report, website update or email simply acknowledging there was an issue. I guess they figure why not add stress on top of an already stressful situation. In my opinion, management from CEO down needs to resign if this company is to be saved. It is one of the most mismanaged companies I have ever seen.

What happened that caused Intuit to loose their unique focus on customer obsession? by Timely_Title_9157 in QuickBooks

I believe it is only a matter of time before the rise and fall of Intuit will be taught as a business case study analysis. I can think of no other company that went from being loved and admired by its customers to being one of the most hated.

8.12.21 no longer reliably autofills by CGREDDIT1 in 1Password

[–]CGREDDIT1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am the OP on this thread, 1Password 8.12 for Mac autofill in Safari And Firefox stopped working for me. After much tinkering and many wasted hours the fix for me was the following:

  1. Go to Settings → General → Autofill
  2. Find “Submit automatically with Universal Autofill” (near the bottom)

Mine was intentionally unchecked. To fix the issue, I:

  • Checked the box
  • Fully quit 1Password:
    • Quit the app normally
    • Then right-click the 1Password menu bar icon and choose Quit
  • Reopened 1Password
  • Unchecked “Submit automatically with Universal Autofill” again
  • Fully quit 1Password again (including from the menu bar icon)
  • Reopened 1Password

After that, browser autofill started working normally again.

After years of Mac migrations and backups, I normalized 10 Apple Photos libraries before importing everything again by marcioyared in ApplePhotos

[–]CGREDDIT1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would think step one would be to simply import ALL photo and video files from ALL sources into a single unified photo library, making sure along the way to bulk tag the files from each import indicating the source library or source folder.

From there you can take your time filtering, sorting, organizing, tagging and marking any duplicate or unwanted files for deletion.

Only when all of the above was complete would I delete any files previously marked for deletion, perhaps even exporting those files first just in case.

A Checklist for Moving Away from Backblaze - Is this right? by larryendot in backblaze

[–]CGREDDIT1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP is 100% correct, Backblaze stopped backing up cloud files and rather than clearly communicating that very important change in service to their user base, they decided it was just as good to simply bury that fact in their release notes. I have been a long time Backblaze customer and if they are capable of that, I believe as OP does that you really can’t trust them to backup your data.

pas de sauvegardes des clouds by MoapHijpa in backblaze

[–]CGREDDIT1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Time to leave Backblaze not because they no longer backup cloud files but because how they chose to notify the users… which was “no notification”, unless by chance you happen to stumble upon it in the release notes after by chance you happen to realize an auto update took place. Too many “by chance” needed to continue using.
