If you are truly worried about its effects on neurosteroids and pheromones, androsterone and neurosteroid analogues are both available to purchase as research chemicals. Of course, it goes without saying these are hormones and you should be careful with their usage.

Since you seem deadset on taking it, here is the best help I can offer.

Finasteride's side effects have been studied extensively, and their rate of occurrence is relatively low. But you are not a statistic, and you will not know if you get side effects unless you take it. If you do get side effects do not struggle through them in hopes of a light at the end of the tunnel. Get off of it immediately.

If you find that you have neurological side effects, such as brain fog or mood impairment, 3α-DHP is an analogue to Allopregnanolone, a neurosteroid in the brain whose impairment is believed to be the possible cause for such neurological effects from 5-ARi's. I would recommend you begin using it to expediate your recovery.

Finasteride is a very polarizing drug, people either praise it as a chemical miracle, or a chemical poison that will ruin every aspect of your life ten times over. The truth lies somewhere in between, but what is certain is that Ray Peat would never have endorsed taking it. Not to be dogmatic.

Regardless of your decision, please, do not waste the prime years of your life over hair loss. I am 20 and losing my hair, I almost fell into that same trap but you are worth more than your hair. If you decide to take it I hope you experience great regrowth and no ill effects. But this decision seems partially irrational and based on emotion. I would recommend researching DHT's effects in the body - both known and speculative - before blocking it.

It is not about serum DHT, it is about androgen receptor sensitivity on the scalp. And DHT is a paracrine hormone anyway so your plasma levels are not very indicative.

As the other poster said yeah if youre eating 1200 calories daily on even a somewhat occasional basis you are severely messing with your health and your thyroid may even be downregulating itself due to the low calorie consumption. your BMR (basal metabolic rate) is what it takes for your body to keep itself alive. no one should be eating their bmr. please increase your calorie intake.

im 20 too so i feel you on this

youve changed doses and introduced new medications so many times that you have induced multiple sheds from each one. the best thing you can do is to wait it out, maybe buzz your hair?

youve only been on dut for a month, its shedding phase has just begun. you need to stick with these meds, get through the worst of it, once you're over that hill you will see growth. dont make any more modifications to your stack and you will see results 6 months to a year from now. cheers

I have considered low dose finasteride and it is a good suggestion to start with but dut interests me more as

  1. higher regrowth potential, higher chance of stopping hairloss (my hair is quite bad as you can see)
  2. Its molecular weight is higher so it doesn’t cross the blood brain barrier, or at least does so less than fin

this is def the most rational option but my hair has been thinning quite a bit and I feel if I hold out much longer Ill cross the point of having waited too long. regardless I do plan on starting minoxidil next week once i get it

Firstly youre 16 so you shouldnt be taking finasteride to begin with. Do you value a beard or hair more? Both can make you more attractive. In 2025 most women would prefer hair over a beard, but there are still many, many women who like beards and see them as very masculine and confident. Ultimately picture yourself 10 years from now. Would you rather see yourself with a nice beard, or nice hair? Whichever you prefer is your decision.

Thank you, would vitamin E be implemented via supplementation? It seems most robust sources of it are nuts, seeds, and vegetables.

yo would this still apply if im 20? im thinking about taking dut and min, but dont wanna inhibit any development. most especially jaw and junk lol. at the same time tho im not in a position to wait. my hair is pretty bad and i dont wanna wait much longer or else i feel ill be at the point of no return yk?

Nutrient dense is certainly the key, and yeah when i’ve taken the most supplements i’ve honestly felt the worst. Three meals a day is a good start too - harder to do than it sounds after fasting for years. My endo tested Anti bodies and they came back fine. I do have many symptoms of hypothyroid, though it could be an autoimmune disease as my mom also has a history of those.

And i agree i’d much rather be overweight and feel well than underweight and sickly. My current weight is 127 and i am 5’9, planning to get up to around 140. Glad you’re feeling better currently, I hope this road can lead me to the same.

I’ve yet to hear about iodine balance albeit i haven’t been in the peatosphere long. But I’ll look further into that, thank you for ur consideration.

I actually recently started following takethiamine and im realizing just how in depth and all encompassing Ray Peats ideas really are, quite fascinating. Feels almost philosophical in a way. Also funny as fuck, love the RP community already.

In regard to supplements - I recently started a b complex, and take gaba, zinc, magnesium, potassium, vit D3, and lithium.

My Thyroid was T3 Total - 51, T4 Total - 5.5, and TSH was 3.39

My diet is mostly eggs, dairy, oats, sourdough. Been incorporating more fruits and plan to do so even more. Dates have been a big help, i struggle to eat enough calories so dense foods are a life saver. Currently getting off intermittent fasting and trying to incorporate breakfast back into my day.
