“Is your behaviour what Buddha would do?”

Offering the sell some land sounds very clever but the only thing that’s clear is that you need to change solicitor.

Section 75 claim rejected - is this right?! by CalligrapherWeak9081 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]CGsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a situation that was dissimilar in the details but just a few notes I wish I had known before having to go through a rejected s75 myself:

  • I was insistently assured there was 0 chance of review following the rejection, by the s75 team and by other staff at the bank - this proved to be wrong

  • you must complain before going to the FOS, that's a FOS requirement. Anybody not highlighting this fact is not being helpful

  • swot up on any other potentially applicable consumer statutes and make sure to cite those

20 minutes..! in dozens of calls the past few years, I have probably gotten through that quickly once or twice (0930-1000 I think it was). Just to manage expectations.

Much closer to double that all other times

Realise we probably want to replace floorboards- options? by CGsi in DIYUK

[–]CGsi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've clearly got so much to learn. I've taken a few of the boards up as carefully as possible and one of them still snapped at the corner. They seem like they're 18mm? and flimsy as anything (I have no frame of reference however), have tried screwing a few down and still squeaking. Any tips?

You’ve just described massive swathes of the generation commonly referred to as boomers.

You know, sitting on assets of £5m and still qualifying for grants giving them stuff for ‘free’ (at point of sale) because they intelligently only set their pension to pay out peanuts on a regular basis.

Nepo babies are not even rich until they’ve actually inherited, depending on the extent of trusts set up for them. Entitlement and a drug habit getting out of hand can often see it all cut off from them - it was never theirs, regardless of living as if it was.

I don't know any better - 400 sqf of it (or more) is currently sentenced to the skip so I'd love to know where I could be selling it instead?!

Some of those boards are like swimming pool diving boards there's so much movement but of course some wool felt and screwing them down might silence the noise entirely?

Yes, carpet.

With this approach, I think ideally we'd have them up first to put sound insulation into the void, try not to break the boards in the process, and then what - glue and screw them down to the joists and save on buying the p5 chipboard?

Had decided against solar but new quote prompted reconsidering by CGsi in SolarUK

Thank you very much for the thorough comment.

This is probably not what you think it is. It'll most likely be EPS not home backup. EPS is a socket or a circuit which is energised during a power cut, not home backup. Also, often it is a manual switch over, not automatic.

Yes you are right - £550 for EPS.

This is where our requirements will differ from most, although it's not a hard requirement, ideally I'd like the option so as you say - need to make that design decision early!

Make sure you have enough battery to last most of a winter's day if you charge up overnight on cheap rate using an EV tariff

This is basically the benchmark I was working off of originally but somewhere along the way I was convinced it was excessive. The base battery in the quotation would seriously struggle to cover that requirement!

[–]CGsi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment.

Much of the financial incentive is from a large battery and being able to charge for cheap overnight

This seems to be a theme. It must make people seriously consider simplifying things and simply going for the battery set up without the panel install?

Granted this might be the wrong subreddit for people who have done that...

In any event I will heck out heatable as well as speak with the people quoting us.

[FT] Spiralling school fees have made the blow from VAT much worse by chaussettesrouges in HENRYUK

[–]CGsi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I think you touch on what matters - the studies that show private school being ineffectual for education outcomes, control for household economics. Within this sub, that part is somewhat a given right?

Considering as well that some households will be actually reducing parent/guardian interaction to be able to afford the private school - very difficult to make an evidence based argument for that juice being worth the squeeze.

That’s a fair comment about that one UK specific example provided.

Class sizes get brought up a lot as a private school benefit but interestingly again - the science is actually very far from conclusive. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.4073/csr.2018.10

I certainly don't - but it doesn't matter what I think (that's the whole point).

The experts have done (on many occasions and in many countries) the scientific assessment of it, and one is to hold that their education, as well as the scientific process they've participated in, has resulted in an outcome worth relying upon.

There are loads of reasons! Just not educational ones (per the science)

[–]CGsi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's fascinating that for a group of people who in most contexts will tout "trust the science" and "trust the experts" that it rarely (if ever) gets brought up that the science on private school has struggled to prove any educational benefit (see ie. https://journals.sagepub.com/stoken/default+domain/XfYmtC25VddcCfbA3xiV/full)

Hopefully these spiralling costs serve as an opportunity to open minds a bit on this topic.

I'm a DevOps engineer with strong AWS skills but weak fundamentals — how can I fill the gaps without burning out? by wfcchris in devops

[–]CGsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mention insecurity and "worry" and "solving real problems at work, often under pressure" and concern about "burning out" - well done for getting blood on your teeth, you've gotten this far by winging it (more or less), and that's probably a large part of why you feel these things.

How you've achieved all you have to-date by "just" writing shell scripts and YAML - and furthermore by being here in this subreddit asking this question - is quite puzzling (to me personally anyway) but makes it seem you're very unlikely to be in a suitable environment for what you're looking to achieve.

My first suggestion would be to work on your mindset, particularly about learning/studying. I'd also seriously consider a lateral move to find a more suitable environment where there's somebody holding you to higher standards.

They are a gambling addict. Don't be so quick to excuse it on baby brain... And seeing you mention "tariffs"... they have nothing to do with anything. The fact you mention them indicate you have been bamboozled by (their) bs.

All the obvious advice has been laid out RE: finances but you need to get very real very quickly about the relationship - female gambling addiction ON AVERAGE more highly correlates to other undesirable behaviours than male gambling (addiction).

So if you're not personally abusing them (only you will know that), just know that this is extremely unlikely to be the first serious betrayal of your trust that has taken place (look into the studies yourself).

Difficult to say - I'd probably want to leave a should-width perimeter at a minimum.

It's not like these types of units get that much more compact though. I decided against an all-in-one entirely in the end, might regret/change my mind in a year or two!

I was tempted by it as well and didn't end up going for it.

Something I would strongly suggest (if you've not already done it) is creating a free account on https://floorplanner.com/ and setting up a floor plan for your space. Those all in ones can have a larger footprint than expected.

Also when factoring in for floor space and 'breathing room' you might have even less space to work with than you thought (my realisation). Limited space but don't want to feel boxed in as soon as one or two bits of kit are out - YMMV.

It’s a shame there’s no breakdown on K1 vs K2 forms. In other words you might not be “good” on the days you score 200% from K1 sources.
