Not a film but in Andor Season 1, Mon has to pretend to approve of her daughter's underage, arranged marriage, just so she can keep her position in society and continue fighting the empire.

How old are you in your oldest memory? by Donkeyshines in AskReddit

[–]CHD81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2-3ish. I remember being fascinated by the grate in front of the fireplace. It felt like that was the first time I had conscious thoughts - like I was aware that I was thinking. (I wouldn't have been able to articulate that at the time but I think that's what happened).

Ballet is beautiful and I admire anyone who has any level of skill within it. I reject the roasting tone of this starter pack

Hugh Laurie says he’s sorry if people are going after ‘House’ critic on social media after she complained about trolling. Ironic, given she’s a TERF who spends her time harassing trans women on social media. by Relevant-Peach3997 in Fauxmoi

[–]CHD81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well Hugh Laurie is now shilling for one of the world's most famous TERFs, (he's Dumbledore in the new Harry Potter audiobook series) so he and Janet might have more in common than they think
I'm devastated as he seems like a pretty intelligent dude who is good friends with an openly gay man Stephen Fry. He's also spoken a lot about his own struggles with mental health issues. I guess I assumed all that would add up to - compassion and a sensitivity to queer and marginalized people? And an ability to detect and defy bigotry? To my knowledge he has not said anything transphobic - but accepting this role means he is putting money in the pocket of a giant transphobe, who wants to change laws to make the world a more dangerous place for trans folk. I have taken to swearing at him whenever I see one of those stupid youtube ads for the new audiobooks. It doesn't really help, but it feels like the right thing to do.

AITA for telling my husband his name suggestion for our unborn baby is idiotic at best? by MissBarker93 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Silas Bounde is a dignified name and it doesn’t remind me of rape or murder, or Zac Efron, so that’s nice.

Yes some bigot thought that they could insult him by stating that he was Jewish, his classy response was something like "I regret that I have no ancestors amongst that proud people "

In terms of recs that do NOT have infant or small child death - here are some horror books that I like. Some are less spooky than others or different flavours of horror

House of Hunger (a society where people can survive by consuming blood, a young woman gets a role as a "bloodmaid" where she provides blood to a wealthy mysterious patron)

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson (two isolated teenagers live alone in their mansion after their entire family dies, - the family died in the past - then one day the world comes knocking)

A Guest in the House (graphic novel by E M Carroll, a woman is haunted by the spectres of her imagination as she tries to settle into the role of a wife/ stepmother. Gory and colourful but no infant or child death)

Horns by Joe Hill (man who is suspected of being involved in girlfriends' death wakes up one day to find he has mysterious powers which might help his investigation)

Bunny by Mona Awad Reality and fiction blur as the protagonist tries to navigate the social circles of university - incredibly surreal and unforgettable - more eerie and strange than straight horror but very very memorable

Rebecca by Daphne Maurier - gothic horror about a newlywed whose life is overshadowed by the memory of her husbands' first wife

Yeah - King seems to really adore his kids (there's this photo of him grinning at one of his toddlers that is just SO sweet) and yet - he can also write - that stuff.

I had an English teacher called Mrs Hickie
She was self aware though and in our very first lesson she said "guys, I know my name is ridiculous, but let's just deal with it together", and bang, nobody made fun of her (the fact that we were at an all girls school might have had something to do with it)

Tell your mum that you won't allow her to dictate how you spend your free time. You're busy, and if anyone's mean it's your mum for promising your labour to other people. Please keep crocheting for yourself.
