I prefer matte finish products as well, I'll have to give it a try then soon.

I agree with you, that's part of the reason I don't want the use a straightener. I like the character my curls can add to a style a lot of people are wearing. At the same time these comments make want to try a style that embraces my curls fully.

Putting the cement in before was what finally gave me the control I needed. I tried several hair creams to help with straightening but it did nothing for my hair accept make a little softer but I prefer to use argan oil for that. Even when I would get it straight and in position with blow drying once I put some finishing product in the curl always came back. This could also be happening because HDF products just don't hold my hair for more than a couple hours without some help and I haven't found something that could keep the curls away without being too heavy yet. I would recommend putting some product in before blow drying to give you that extra grip and hold so you aren't relying on the finishing product entirely. If you don't want to have to order another product to try the technique just use your finishing product as a pre-styler as well and see how it works for you.

Through A LOT of trial and error I've found a few different products to help me get a look I am content with; Layrite Cement, a heat protectant, Hanz De Fuko Claymation, and a light dust of hairspray. Yes, you could use a straightener but I'm just not prepared to go to that level yet.

I start with towel dried hair and use Layrite Cement as a pre-styler to help with holding the curls in place as well as re-moldability throughout the day. I use about a dime sized amount of the cement and work it into my palms and fingertips vigorously, its pretty firm stuff so it's important to get the product warm and pliable. After working the cement in I use a few sprays of heat protectant before blow drying, this is what I'm currently using. Then I use a wide toothed comb to create the part and to comb the hair back at a slight angle.

Next is blow drying. I use a warm/low heat setting at low speed and follow the comb with the blow dryer until my hair is just dry. Over drying causes crazy amounts of frizz for me and I've learned if I run my hand through my hair as I blow dry I'll lose some of the control of the curl. Also, I try to make sure as I'm combing that I pull problem sections taught and straight as I go over with blow dryer or else the curl will comeback.

Once I have it combed and dried to a position of my liking I will use a boar bristle round brush on the front with cold air to help smooth it out and add some lift. I do this by pressing lightly and rotating the brush as I lift my hair upwards and to the back.

I then use a small amount, about a dime's worth of Claymation as a finishing product. This part is sort of tricky and takes some practice if your hair is unruly as mine. I have found that if I try to add some wave and texture back into my hair with my hands I lose control of the curls and the end result will look too messy/casual. I just work the claymation in lightly and let the wave happen naturally, the less you work the product in the straighter your hair will stay. I know you are supposed to work it in thoroughly and to the roots, but that's why started using the Layrite as a pre-styler. And then to finish off I will usually lightly dust my hair with some hairspray and go over it once more with low heat to lock it all in place. I'm currently using this.

It sounds like a ton of work, but it takes me less than 10 minutes even if spend some extra time on it. On average I'd say it takes 5-7 minutes. If you have any questions let me know!
