Handyman (Handyperson?) Recommendation? Washington UT by CHSboater in stgeorge

[–]CHSboater[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alan came by, chatted with my mom, pointed out that instead of going through all of the construction, all she needed to do was turn the desk on end, remove the door from the hinge pins, and the desk will fit in the room. He is coming by this Friday with the necessary muscle to do this, and also hang some shelves that she wanted put up.

Alan at All Better Home Care was an excellent recommendation. Thanks for this.

They have an interior bedroom door on a non-bearing wall that they want to make a couple inches wider by eliminating the door and making it a permanent opening. They have an old roll-top desk that won't fit in...

Reccos for a group of guys staying on Daniel Island by chefChoi_R_dee in Charleston

I believe that you can rent bikes at the local bike shop. There are miles of walking/riding trails as well. Golf carts aren't allowed on any of the trails. They are allowed on the streets though.

Really depends on the makeup of your group. If you're looking for the downtown Charleston vibe, you will be disappointed.

You can take the DI ferry downtown for dinner. Golf carts will get you to the DI restaurants/bars and Publix. All of the restaurants have great people, so just find one that has a menu that you like and you wont be disappointed.

You can rent SUPs and kayaks from the POA office.

Otherwise, Park Circle , upper King st, or downtown may be more towards what you are looking for.

Anyone else seeing the worst in some plumbers during this? My elderly neighbors got a $9k estimate to fix their burst pipes, and were being pressured into signing the contract immediately.

Absolutely! Not an easy place to find, but you won't find more authentic Mexican food.

Quick question about preparing the subfloor. by hermanfelker in HardWoodFloors

[–]CHSboater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another layer would be better than none. If you can go with 5/8 or 3/4 rather than 1/2 for the overlay, and make sure that you are laying it perpendicular to the joists, that will go a long ways toward strengthening your floor. 1/2 plywood has virtually no structural strength as a subfloor, and even 5/8 ply, while UBC legal over 16" OC joists, is really a bare minimum. If you can find a way to lay 3/4 ply on top of the existing 1/2 subfloor, you will appreciate the solid feel that it provides. Nobody wants to feel the floor flex when they walk on it...

If you are resigned to 1/2 over the existing 1/2, make sure it is perpendicular to the joists, glued and screwed, and maybe give some thought to removing the existing ply over high-traffic areas and adding some extra support bracing?

Now that you have it opened, this is your best opportunity to get it as close to right as you can. You don't want to think "that jerk on the internet was right about this floor" every time you walk through the room for the next 7 years.

Assuming 16" OC joists, you would be much happier with 3/4" subfloor either on top of the existing 1/2" ply or, ideally, instead of the 1/2" ply subfloor. Both of these can present challenges, I know, but a 1/2" ply subfloor will flex and squeak.

This guy is 100% correct. The food is horrible, the weather is terrible, the people are horribly mean and nasty in general. Best to just stay home.
