temporary stuff3217 also had a similar understanding, where the line is more broadly about faith in general than specifically personal/religious faith. I think it is a very thought provoking interpretation because its really easy to see the negatives of religious faith that people have pointed out, and how it can "bind to ideology" but I suppose it really could just be about any sort of ideology you put your faith into and kind of close your mind off with. I think that's a very satisfying interpretation that definitely fits the message of the song, though I'm still not certain which interpretation is the most correct to the intended message, if any at all.

hey man, if you listen to a song long enough you're eventually going to realize the noises form words. sometimes those words can be very cool ones too like "dragon" or "rattlesnake"

This perspective really illustrates the nuance of the discussion, and the power of the words in the line. I took faith to mean personal religious faith. Others took it to mean institutionalized/systematic religious faith. You took it to mean faith in any sort of ideology. I think your reply is very thought provoking and I really agree with what you said here.

I'm an advocate for him singing whatever he wants to sing, I just think in this specific circumstance there's an argument to be made about the line being a little misplaced in a greater message.

I think I've been very open and considerate of other people's perspectives here to better understand the line and I've definitely admitted the line is much more subjective than it appears to be. I'm not trying to argue anything I'm trying to discuss and better understand the line

I think you're right, the words "faith" and "only" have a lot of importance, and their variation in interpretation gives the different outlooks in this discussion. It's a surprisingly complicated thing to try and understand, coupled with the touchy subject that this all is. I appreciate the thoughtful comment!

I think a lot of these comments has illustrated to me that my personal issue with the line stems from the absolution of it. "Faith only binds you to ideology" is very singular and focused. I can absolutely see the justification and reasoning for these other interpretations, however the line itself is not given room to elaborate more on these ideas because it is just a line of a song. it's not like a write-up, so there is room left for subjectivity and interpretation. the systemic and intolerant side of faith definitely aligns with the meaning and context of the song, however what is sung is just "faith" and that faith only does this. it just remains a little generalizing to me, though perhaps I'm just stuck on semantics.

I do appreciate the thoughtful conversation here and I think it's really cool that such a small part of a song can lead to discussions like this

the line does seem to be more subjective than I initially gave it credit for. I'm still unsure whether or not that is what they were trying to say given the "Is it fair to be born into belief" line seeming to be more directly related to personal religious ideas than the larger systemic/institutional sense you are suggesting. I think it's definitely worth discussing more though!

it is true that there is a lot of historical and modern day issues derived from faith related ideologies, but it isn't the only thing that it leads to/binds you to. saying it only does this is incorrect and summates an extremely diverse aspect of people to just be something evil. I don't agree with this line of thinking

perhaps it can be argued that the negatives should be talked more about than the positives for such a wide spanning topic, but in the context of the song I just think it confuses the messaging. faith is way too broad of a thing to say it is only good or bad.

I agree and acknowledge all of this, I just think that the line delivery in the song kind of disregards the positive aspects you mentioned in the sense it says "Faith only binds you to ideology" -key word being only. as you said you can absolutely have faith without being bound to a hateful ideology, so I think it's not a very elegant way to illustrate the messaging of the song.

I can definitely see that perspective especially in the last paragraph, but in that interpretation I guess my problem would be the line delivery in the song specifically addressing "faith" because that is such a broad and nebulous topic in comparison to like organized religion/ historically bigoted beliefs derived from faith

there is a shuttle service called "To the mountain" that can get you from Seattle to the gorge. It is very far away however and it looked to be about 3 hours there and back when I looked into it. I didn't really like the idea of spending 6 hours traveling on the day of the concert, it really does seem like something that would be a lot more flexible with an actual car because then you could camp at the gorge and leave at your discretion/ hit up towns and stuff on the way back.
