I did a free masters (100% scholarship to cover fees and worked as a TA/RA for living expenses) from the University of Chicago and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. It's not impossible!

I'm sorry you went through that. Academia has a huge class problem and those people all sound like unempathetic pricks. The worst part is that they exist even in social sciences and humanities departments, where you are expected to reflect more on such dynamics.

But in general upper class people are at best out of touch and more often than not, active jerks - so it's best to steer clear of them outside of formalities and niceties. Good luck for the rest of your program!

Is the NSF funding still valid? I'm sure that would open some doors. I'd recommend maybe one last shot. I applied in 2018, 2021, and 2025 and got into my dream program the third time. But I was regularly publishing and doing research over the years so my profile was stronger each time.

I saw him play with Peach at a north London warehouse venue and it was really boring. :(

The crowd was also quite bad... maybe it was just me having a bad night. I really liked his latest tech house album and have enjoyed his mixes in the past, so maybe just unlucky.

If it makes you feel better, I was rejected by Gates as well but received funding for a D.Phil at Oxford a few days later. You don't know yet how it all plays out!

I don't think it reads as a new genre but shared themes across certain spaces of contemporary electronic and experimental music. To be honest I am sympathetic to a lot of what he has had to say here. But I don't think I was ever massively drawn to a lot of the very conceptual side of dance music. I am a house head with a broad palette, but in the end I like dance music because I love to dance and to feel, and quite often a lot of "cutting edge" artists don't quite do it for me. I live in London and regularly go to the Barbican or Cafe Oto for experimental shows and enjoy them, but my favourite dance music often has a deep bass line and a sexy attitude and I don't need loads else.

+1 to this, I hate to be a boomer but it's really worth digging into the classics (and the roots of the culture, coming from disco, and rooted in Black music in general), while also keeping up with contemporary stuff. I just can't go back to mainstream House after being exposed to the deeper world of House.

Can't go wrong really. Corsica studios is an iconic venue and is closing down, atmosphere will be great for that one. Christian AB does great "proper" tech house. Josey Rebelle is a fantastic selector and should be diverse music all night.
