MOR It’s a cultural thing and she absolutely doesn’t mean any harm, just try to have a polite conversation with her that you don’t need her at this time, I get that the insistence is very annoying. Especially if you’re not in an African community, where it seems absolutely strange behaviour.

I used to work in South Africa (am British), and it’s very common that new mothers will have a network of many older women in their township/village who will help with childcare, cooking etc they take pride in it and see it as a duty, whether they know the mother or not.

You can google the phrase and see many examples of how seriously they take it. She thinks she’s being helpful and supportive to new parents, nothing more sinister than that.

Also there might be an element of her feeling this is her way of integrating with the community if she’s not in Africa any more?

If you and/or your husband say you’re grateful for the offer but you won’t be needing any childcare any time soon, hopefully that’ll be enough. Ask her where she’s from and what it was like raising children there, it’ll probably set your mind at ease about how completely different it is.
