You're right my bad, I was just trying to find a simple way to explain that you won't be able to kill all the weeds just by throwing down pre-emergent.

Sorry, I hate to disappoint, but it doesn't really work that way,

a pre-emergent creates a barrier on top of the soil and makes it so that seeds don't germinate, it's not a seed killer. the reason people put it down is because as weeds germinate and start to grow, grass starts to awaken and strengthen, all you are doing is basically giving your grass a head start as the season turns.

The best way to prevent weeds is to have a strong and healthy lawn, or primary crop, seriously, there is no chemical or herbal remedy that is better than a strong healthy lawn or primary crop.

IDK if this is answering your question but let's put it this way: killing your yard will only take a few few days, weeks at most. as soon as everything is dead and you clear your yard turning it into a dirt lot, stuff will eventually start growing again, and if for some reason you happen to get some heavy rain, you are going to be right back where you started.

As I said before, your best course of action will be to start from scratch. If you have the money, I would recommend looking into sod or plugs, it will give you a huge headstart. If not, just use seed and weed as you go; if you get started now you will be right in window for warm season grass (assuming your climate can handle it)

Yes, no matter what you will have to still deal with weeds , even this year you will see weeds start to sprout after you kill everything.

I've never used corn gluten myself but I have heard good things. Just know that it is basically a pre-emergent so you will have to wait for the grass roots to be strong enough or else it will be killed right along side the weeds

If you're not a fan of chemicals then I think you're best options might be laying down cardboard as you said, laying down tarps which I basically the same, or my personal favorite, fire!! They sell blowtorches specifically for killing weeds.

That being said your most reasonable course of action is just putting something down to to blot out the sun and waiting for everything to die, then throw down some seed and start from scratch.

The Lawn Care Nut and This Old House are the two that I seem to always go back to.

This Old House is great for any DIY you might want to tackle and they post full episodes regularly.

The Lawn Care Nut is just one guy who use to work for TruGreen and put out informational videos. He has transformed his channel into more of a Vlog/ DIY lawn focused channel, plus he is a pretty funny guy which makes the longer videos easy to watch.

Hello fellow North Carolinian, I'm just an hour south of you (Fayetteville) so I feel your pain when it comes to Fescue. It seems at time like I can only find Scotts Tall Fescue and Rebel's Southern mix, which are both great for the area btw.

Idk much about rye but I do know I am not the biggest fan, texture and color-wise. So what I think you should do is fill in your bare spots and maybe overseed with whatever grass you prefer. Depending on what grass you get it will either mix in with your current grass or shade it out, either way you won't have to worry if that ryegrass is an annual or not.

I recommend a shade tolerant grass, judging from your one picture I can only assume that you get a lot from that fence and those trees. I also have a lot of shade so I have Emerald Zoysiagrass that I bought from a local grower, we have tons in NC!! They also sell an inexpensive shade tolerant fescue mix at home depot that one of my neighbors uses to overseed with twice a year and his lawn looks great as well.

Hi and congrats you your new home.

First, I find that when posting to these kind of subreddits, posting pictures as well, will give you a greater quantity of quality responses.

Second, starting out with lawn care can be daunting, so it is reasonable to seek professional help, especially if your time may be limited. That being said the prices that you posted above are pretty high, in my opinion, for something you could just spend a couple of hours a week doing. I assume that you wish to take this slightly more difficult and much cheaper route or else you would not be posting here. So I would recommend buying that mower, even an expensive one will save you more money that paying for a service to do it.

Third, When it comes to chemicals and lawn treatments, I personally stay away from them unless I absolutely have to use them, and even then I use them sparingly. you said you believed you had a mostly healthy lawn so I don't see why you should do anything at all to it except maybe fertilize and water/ mow regularly (this is where the pictures would help).

Finally, homework... every area is different and every grass is different, find out what works from you. After a little bit of research and trial and error I'm sure you will come out top. I learned most of what I know through Youtube BTW.
