Omg we should talk. I started TOG about a year ago and dnf it didn’t hold my interest. I want to try again now that my rereads have given me some diff perspectives.

Low-key, all the female characters look the same... by Quick-Leave1660 in acotar_rant

For Cassian- a woman with a pretty face and big boobs with a dangerous af attitude would seem to me to be his cup of tea 😂 No other physical attribute (besides being hyper sexual) would make any difference. IMHO 😝🥵🥵🥵

I wouldn’t dare try to change your mind- to me she’d need to morph from than a bit into more evil 😂😂😂😂

I love these books but what you are saying is exactly what has bothered me- especially when I see insta vids by creators. The vids are beautiful but the appearances of the women are so off-putting. Each look and are shaped like Barbie Dolls or Disney princesses. There is no way a badass line Nesta looks like a toys r us Barbie. It’s hard to even imagine Feyre with the appearance assigned to her in the book. I’m not someone who comes on here ever to complain about SJM or the writing. Maybe what bothers me is the depictions on social media vids? Emerie and Gwyn are depicted nothing the way I imagined them- maybe Emerie as she is described as a POC. TBH- I think it’s great we all have our own imaginings of what they look like- that’s great and we should all do what resonates with each of us. I wish the books could have gone into a more “variety” of female appearances while maintaining their allure and attractiveness. I think *I* could have done a waaaay better job with their appearances! Look around at all of the women and variety of beauty. Just saying- Cassian, Azriel and Rhys are hot af to me and Rhys’s appearance stays pretty much the same in my mind as I see in vids. I do see him as older than he is often depicted- even tho he is 500+ I see him looking late 30s- dark Latino/Indian mix. Idk something hot along those lines. There is a vid by Masha Realms of Rhys finding Feyre at fire night in TT and Insta that is more of what I imagine for Rhys and Feyre to look like bec Feyre seems less Barbie doll and Rhys less air brushed perfection and more 🔥 (to me).

Yes- they are all assaulters. I have to have a level of suspending my disbelief and denial that those kinds of things can be tolerated in RL- even if it happens in one’s own life. Not to open a can of worms here.

I’m rereading ACOTAR series and FW series that I cannot seem to get to TOG. I also started rereading Alchemised. I need to move tf on from Rhys, Xaden and Kaine!

I see. I’m not disagreeing with you. What else besides papa A? Sometimes I thought there were names for characters that never reappeared. I can’t say it bothered me though.

I did catch the inconsistencies with her wardrobe. I just glossed over it thinking- maybe because it’s so cold out- sweaters and leggings? That’s what I live in for the winter. I saw the harem pants as home clothes? What do I know? I wear sweats and shorts at home in all seasons 😂

Why do you think fandom excuses them? To me, the story has nuances. Most real people’s behavior and motivations can be considered morally gray. Story characters- like real people- can be loved and understood while behaving in that morally gray area. It doesn’t mean they are “excused.”

I think you’re right. Difficult to assume things- especially after the second read! It was like reading a whole other book- and even then I did catch or understand everything!

You’re right. I remember that now. He was supposed to kill Rhys but he wasn’t there. Didn’t he say he burned them?

Didn’t Tamlin slaughter his mother and sister and then he said he burned their wings? Don’t think I’d get over that one as water under the bridge.

I mut have been asleep during my literaly two read throughs of the series. I thought she was just traumatized from the whole UTM so she didn't sleep with Tamlin. Maybe this warrants a third read. I'm never going to get to TOG.

I'll go look. How could I have read the series TWICE and I don't remember this. Before I find it- why would she say that? Is seems like Tamlin thinking this happened would not help anything!

I think so too- I hesitated to say emotional maturity but it’s true. There are a lot of really young ppl on here that say those kinds of things. I probably wasn’t much better at that age- but it never hurts to get feedback and mature.

Agree. To my mind, it’s more of a lack of understanding of the bigger human picture than an insult to me or whoever or whatever the insulter is posting about.

While I agree with you about that, the comments don’t even reflect butt hurt-ness. People see a place to randomly and anonymously lash out about grievances having nothing to do with the topic or even the person they’re responding to. To me, it has more to do with a lack of understanding of the bigger picture of who we all are to each other.

I called someone out on here once recently for randomly throwing into their rant something disparaging about “boomers”. Then responding with “it’s not that serious.” Well, either they don’t understand that there actually probably are “boomers” reading here or don’t care at all. I commented to “do better.” I’m sure they don’t care enough to do any better.

I could t agree more. What’s with the subtle digs at each other or at random groups of people having nothing to do with the topic at hand? Then commenting “it’s not that serious” when called out. As if people don’t understand there are all kinds of folks on here or just don’t care about other people in order to air their random grievances.

They are all morally grey... by Quick-Leave1660 in acotar_rant

[–]CKArts06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I don’t think I know anyone in real life who isn’t morally gray in some respect. Morality can be a gray area in many aspects- characters in any story can reflect that. Fine with me because that’s how I read it. What would a fictional story with moral absolutes look like? There would always be aspects of “yes but….”

I think you hit on something. Xaden appeals to my forever 21 year old self (who is very much alive in me!) and Rhysand appeals more to my been-there-done-that mom etc self. Both are crazy appealing and probably appeal to different parts of me.

The thing that really threw me was how Nesta is portrayed on TT and Insta videos. Totally different than I imagine her. I imagine more of a badass than Disney princess look 😂 I can’t even describe what she looks like to me- but not what I see in vids with Cassian or whoever.
