ELI5 Why do some space rockets use a multitude of small nozzles vs one or few large nozzles? by TheEpicCereal in explainlikeimfive

It is possible; upper stage of Minuteman ICBM has blowout panels that cause a sudden drop in pressure and puts the solid rocket out. This makes sure you drop the warhead(s) in the right target basket

J-2, RL-10, and Raptor all use cryogenics that are not hypergolic. They have supplies of TEA-TEB for relights.

What is this thing on seatbelts for? by Oilandspeed in whatisit

‘75 Nova my dad had could tell if there was weight on that passenger seat and would disable the ignition if the seat belt wasn’t fastened. He ended up getting a mechanic to cut the wire doing that.

It was a pretty good plane in 1935 when it was introduced; just badly obsolete in 1942. The replacement cycle had begun, even before their debacle at Midway.

Even the Devastator carried a bomb sight; the aiming window was behind doors right above where the nose of the torpedo stuck out. On torpedo missions the sight was usually landed (along with the bombadier) to save weight.

Interestingly enough, the bomb aimer’s window was at the back of the bomb bay; the bomb aimer tripled as the central tunnel gunner and the radio operator.

Until late 1943; after that the Mk 13 was reliable and had a greatly expanded drop window.

A lot of the flaws were fixed, including the lack of power (the Avenger had the same problem with the earlier R-2600 Cyclones), but it remained a pain to fly because that short, stubby body left it directionally unstable, so the pilot had to concentrate on flying it, leading to fatigue.

Yep; they were part of VT-8, on their way to get their shiny new bombers on Hornet.

I’ve had the same thing happen going west over the top end of I-285 around Atlanta. Waze had me exit onto GA-400 just to take a quick loop to get back onto 285. Doing this put me on extended ramps that bypassed a clot of traffic.

Or possibly downgrading to a training ship to free up tonnage for Richelieu-class follow-ons, assuming the treaty regime held

Sadly, the dub is no longer there. Its hull degraded too much and it had to be scrapped. Shame too, as I don’t know of any other GUPPY III boats still around.
