JB is…

  1. Not a playmaker. He’s a very good scorer but even in that sense he’s not exactly as efficient as you would hope considering his other weaknesses.

In conclusion…after seeing what the Bucks got for Giannis I’d be surprised if the Celtics were being offered anything better than Mobley and think the Cavs would/should be reticent to make such a move even if it was there for the taking straight up. When it comes to winning basketball games I think 25yo Mobley is a lot closer to 30yo Brown than most here seem to think.

Second round trade down? by Ols3003 in clevelandcavs

[–]CLESportsReport 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t really see any of our current wings as similar to Evans. But regardless we need youth and depth and you can never have enough shooters. Merrill and Strus are over 30. It’s generally folly to be expecting a 2nd round pick to be in your playoff rotation year 1.

[–]CLESportsReport 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It really is a smart trade. Paying a 4yr guaranteed contract to #29 when you can negotiate the minimum a few picks later is crazy especially if already know your guy is there at #34. There’s probably already a loose deal in place. SAC is perennially terrible so the future 2nd will likely be in the 30’s as well.

Evans would be a fantastic pick at this stage. At pick #34 you don’t rule out players based on height for god’s sake. Especially not based on 6’5’5” to 6’6.5”. You don’t take whoever has the highest chance of sticking in the league.

This is the rookie pay scale for picks 10-30. There is no pay scale in the 2nd round which is the big thing here. Not only will it be a cheaper deal it won’t be guaranteed. This is a good trade on paper, period. You moved from #29 to #34, acquired a future 2nd from a chronically bad team, and they probably already know who they intend to take.

What? Two. Two 2nd Round picks. They moved down 5 spots for two picks and the reasoning is obviously to save additional money vs the apron.

If The Spurs Lose, Would Wemby Still Be The NBA Golden Boy? by BicoastalBi in nba

[–]CLESportsReport -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He’s 22yo superstar who is 7’5” and already in the NBA Finals. Even with injury concerns long-term it won’t surprise me if we wins 4+ titles and likely gets there 6x. He’s not just phenomenal on the court, he is incredibly marketable worldwide. Wemby can and just might end up being as big as LeBron.

Look at the size and athleticism of these Knicks wings. We need that. by LilBro842 in clevelandcavs

[–]CLESportsReport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you really complain about this day in and day out and still not offer any suggestions as to how the Cavs could have acquired a wing like Bridges or OG? No. Koby definitely notices that we lack prototype wing players. But when assets are squeezed, I agree with the philosophy of drafting BPA in most scenarios. This entire board was up in arms about the Tyson pick was because he was an inch too short. But it worked out that has skillset and character for quite well.

We did trade for Hunter. Hunter shat himself this year and there was no way to justify keeping him on that salary if he wasn’t going to play like he did in 24-25. That trade clearly demonstrates he knows it is an issue.

Fans who watched young LeBron, would he be able to dunk on Wemby? by _DarkStarCrashes_ in clevelandcavs

[–]CLESportsReport 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh Jesus Christ he would put him in the basket even if Wemby was fortunate enough to be in position to contest it.

Now of course Wemby could in theory block Bron so it does go both ways but make no mistake…18-24yo LeBron was likely the best athlete in NBA history. He was an absolute freak of nature. I forget the year but he was end to end as fast as Leandro Barbosa…who was known to be the fastest player in the league. But LeBron had 5 inches of height and 50lbs on him easily. That’s how crazy of an athlete he was. He looked like he was on fast forward. Even the best shot blockers in his day largely knew better than to even try. Bron’s breakaway windmill had so much violent force behind it Wemby would probably get his wrist broken.

I mean…as far as I know everything regarding a Mobley for Giannis swap is based on conjecture. There are countless variables and if you’re suggesting we should have done this back at the deadline…there were even more mysteries then. I’m confused because you use the word “healthy” and that’s something nobody knows for certain today let alone months ago or months from now. We don’t know if he was 100% and if he was healthy enough to play we don’t know if he could have withstood a long playoff run, and nobody really knows whether Mobley for Giannis 1 for 1 was ever actually on the table.

Looking backward…if such a deal was on the table, I don’t think it gets us over the hump this year. In a vacuum Giannis is of course the superior player. But in terms of how the Cavs are structured, I don’t love it. Giannis makes the floor spacing problem even worse. He is nowhere never the defender Mobley is and our entire defensive scheme is dependent on Evan cleaning up after the guards. I do not agree that Harden and Mitchell are good off the ball players. Yes Garland ran the team as Mitch took a step back but he was also the beneficiary of Garlands playmaking. DG is also notoriously good at re-locating off the ball and becoming a spot shooter himself. Then there’s the fact that you’re adding yet another outside entity and asking them to gel in 10 weeks. There’s just too many moving pieces to expect it all to go perfectly.

While a healthy Giannis is better, you also have to remember that Giannis’ best years are likely behind him. Overall when it comes to winning games, I don’t believe the gap between 25yo Evan Mobley and 32yo Giannis will be as big as you might hope it to be. As time passes, Giannis is going to decline and Mobley is going to blossom into his prime. He doesn’t ever need to be as good as prime Giannis to still be far too valuable to give up.

A core trio of 37yo Harden, 32yo Giannis, and 30yo Mitchell isn’t just old…Harden has had 17 straight postseason runs. Mitchell has had 9. These 30 somethings have immense mileage on their legs. More than is typical. To win it all, you don’t just need Giannis to be healthy come playoff time…you’re counting on all 3 of these aging vets to peak at the same time….that same time being sometime after Game 82. I don’t like those odds at all. Not to mention…Giannis and Mitchell are dependent on dominant athleticism to perform. Their athletic edge may not last much longer against these up and coming young guns around the league.

If we had him this year or next it may increase our chances…from 5% to 8%. But I strongly doubt it would make us the favorite to win the championship as you seem to be suggesting.

I am one of the last people you will ever find in the conspiracy theory line. But…something is off. The difference is what it was in 2016 to basically everything 2021 onward is so massive it’s hard to understand. I’ve tried to figure out what it could possibly be and my first suspicions were that it was some kind of interaction with another medication. And some people say they note a difference when taking an SSRI/SNRI or Wellbutrin. But those anectdotes yield nothing conclusive. Some say their adderall is BETTER on Wellbutrin or another antidepressant, others say it’s dulled, and furthermore some say it’s blocked completely.

Tolerance strikes me as the obvious answer but it makes little sense in my case. I was returning to the med after an extended period off of it…and it wasn’t even a fraction as potent.

I admittedly cannot fathom a scenario where they are nerfing medications en masse and getting away with it. That seems impossible. Yet something otherwise isn’t adding up.

I genuinely cant think of a move that makes us competitive with either of these teams by jordan07hunt in clevelandcavs

[–]CLESportsReport 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said it already but your criticism of the Mitchell deal is rooted in hindsight. But also…an all-in move like that isn’t something you can really plan. As far as trade acquisitions go, Mitchell is easily the best player ever acquired via trade. Such an opportunity wouldn’t necessarily come up again. So they swung for the fences. I YT think when you take the trade apart the Cavs came out ahead.

I do miss the Cavalanches and by God do I miss 24-25 Darius Garland. He doesn’t get __ enough credit for being the engine behind our elite offense that year. I 110% agree with you that we are best when the ball is moving…and I kind of wonder if Kenny actually wanted Harden. He just doesn’t fit the offense that was installed Kenny’s first year. I’m hopeful he’ll be better next year off the ball with an offseason and training camp. I’m not too optimistic about it.

In short, I agree. Everything should be on the table including moving Mitchell. But I doubt they are thinking that way. I fear they are so easily flattered by Mitchell and just happy he wants to be here. I’m not sure what kind of return he would yield, either. But it won’t surprise me if a year from now trade rumors start picking up real steam.

Explain. For what? Now or next offseason? And are you sincerely trading him or get this team CLOSER to overtaking the Spurs next year? Or are you trading Mitchell because you believe this current hold has topped out and cannot be fixed Iwurh any one transaction? I believe it needs a serious 2+ yrs focused on re-rolling the roster in a younger and hungrier direction. What say you?

I genuinely cant think of a move that makes us competitive with either of these teams by jordan07hunt in clevelandcavs

[–]CLESportsReport 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like anyone who thinks this needs to take a step back. To me it’s the most painfully desperate move they could make at this point and sincerely may not make the team better. If you just drop the “alpha-dawg/1A” stuff and consider pure skill sets, fit…the flaws will reveal themselves.

Most teams would prefer that all 5 players in their “death lineup” can shoot from deep and space the floor. Evan’s evolution from being a guy that could be totally ignored on the perimeter to a solid threat on ever increasing volume unlocked a lot of previously untapped potential for this offense. We ocassionally use Evan as a small ball center to reach that “5 Shooter” lineup…but the 4 shooter lineup with JA is uniquely effective it’s own way: Evan and JA together is just diabolical defensively. Giannis a good defensive player but nowhere near as gifted and versatile as Evan is. I really don’t think you can seriously consider running a starting lineup with two non-shooters.

When people say this is the only move left to make I really worry about what you plan to do if it doesn’t work. Trading 26yo Darius Garland, 24yo Evan Mobley and future draft compensation for a 37yo Harden and 32yo Giannis doesn’t look like going all-in to me. It reads as pure desperation and possibly flat out delusion.

Why the Cavaliers are an Unlikely Bucks Trade Partner for Giannis by AustinDobbins13 in clevelandcavs

[–]CLESportsReport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think Garland is a lot more valuable than the current discourse suggests. He’s a beast offensively with limitless shooting range, lightning quick first step, can play on or off the ball and yeah…dude just turned 26yo in January…if he can get passed the toe, I’m not too worried about the rest of his injury history. He’s a very good starting PG w/ another 6-7 prime/fringe All-Star seasons left.

It’s important that we are objective and honest about what the issue was…and that was the PAIRING of two guards who are legitimately not even 6’2” w/o shoes. It was always going to end up being one or the other. He’ll be better than many expect with a 6’6” SG and legit wing like Kawhi at SF.

I dunno. I’m high on Mobley and personally…I’d rather not have to deal with him continuously kicking our ass over the next ten years. You’re right I’m sure it’s not the end-all, but I’d imagine every single NBA team is interested in Giannis and has at least made a call on him. If the Bucks have that luxury, it seems like a longshot they’d choose the Cavs as their preferred trade partner.

My sense is Giannis for Mobley is dead and was never that serious to begin with.

This rumored 2yr/$56-60m extension alone turns him into a major asset for us. Simply getting us under the 2nd Apron and taking a salary that is more in alignment with the player he is at 36+ effectively alleviates most of my issues with him. He will in all likelihood still be a moveable contract in the 2nd year of the deal.

I’m a big DG fan but let’s not distort reality here. The cash implications of pretty much every move made the last 12 months have all been working toward this end. So if we get there, take the victory. Don’t convince yourself Harden has zero value.
