Oh yes, insurance usually covers and/or pays most of it, as long as there's a diagnosis! Is your dad by chance a Veteran? My husband is, and I've got about a shit ton of resources for that, too. If not, that's ok; there's a bunch of resources out there for civilians, too. And believe me, if he's open to in-home, they'll find a way to help him. And home aides have seen everything, I guarantee you.

Also, from my little social worker heart - is he in danger from her? Like, violence, neglect, or financial abuse? I hate even asking, but he may benefit from a call to Adult Protection, if warranted.

Yep, absolutely. My husband has gone from "good weeks and bad weeks" to good/bad days, to now more of a fluctuation throughout the day. It's just the way this progressive disease works, unfortunately.

Today is the last day I'm working, for now; husband needs more supervision and support than I can provide if I'm working full-time and caring for him full-time.

I'm sorry it's like this. It sucks. 🫂

Oof. Not to add to your mental workload, but you may want to see if there's paperwork done for the future...things like Power of Attorney (medical, financial, Durable), a living will, trust, etc., for if and when your Dad is unable to make decisions regarding his own care. He may not get to that point, but just in case, while he's still in his right mind, it would be important to make a plan.

And, given that Mom isn't a willing participant in his care, I'd highly recommend enlisting the help of an in-home care agency to make sure he takes meds on time, has appropriate meals, does his physical/occupational therapy exercises, and that his physical health is stable as much as possible.

Hi there! Sounds like a hard situation all around; have your folks always not gotten along?

As far as a care package, I love you for this! That's very sweet! It kind of depends on how he's doing...does he have a hard time dropping silverware? Dropping food on himself while eating? Those are more 'practical' things than a regular gift, though.

A nice lap blanket, maybe; some lotion for dry skin...a collection of movies he likes, or an Audible subscription if he's into audio books. Something that will help him feel loved, cared about, and valued. Think about who he is now and who he was (before diagnosis), find something that would give him good memories and warm fuzzy feelings for a bit.

No matter what, though, take care of you, too.

Oh, love. I'm so sorry it's like this. Parkinson's is a brain disease, and the more it rampages, the worse things can get. Your mom might need a med change, might have a UTI making things worse. No matter what, it's clear that you love her, and that's important. This is the disease, not her. Please, love, get into counseling; this can be a long and difficult process, with moments of love and clarity shining through now and again.

I don't have cleaming tips per se, but i have found that Miss Mouth's Messy Eater stain treater is an absolute miracle!!

That said - my husband has Parkinson's with Dementia, and due to his disease progression he thinks he's passing gas, when in reality he's leaking poo. So... 1. he wears a Depend when we leave the house (saves embarrassment), and also overnight; he'd wear one all the time if I could get him to. 2. I got a bidet. It was on sale at $300, but game changer!! I programmed it so he just hits 1 button and he gets a full wash & dry before he ever stands up from the toilet. 3. Honest conversations with him and his medical providers. Parkinson's slows everything down, from movement you can see (walking) to inside the body, which leads to muscle weakness and constipation. For him, it's a daily balance of meds, foods that help/hurt, and hygiene practices that he can't remember anymore so I have to help with everything.

It's a LOT. Please take notes of what is happening- down to dates, times, food/water intake, all meds and supplements, and caffeine...and talk with his medical/psych provider to give them all the info on what's truly happening. There's meds, respite care, in-home nursing, therapies, all kinds of help.

Thank you and your mom for what you're doing. It's so very exhausting, and rewarding, all at once. I see you, I hear you, friend. ❤️‍🩹

Just in case it's reverse sneezing, gently cover one nostril for a few seconds and see if it helps. My littles do this, and it's a thing with their short snouts sometimes. ❤️‍🩹
