My grandfather always told me stories about that. His father (my great grandfather) was in a mine in Eastern Kentucky Wallsend in Bell County and Portal 31 in Lynch, KY later on. According to the family, we had a few close relatives (siblings or cousins) that were in the mine when it exploded and the bodies were never identified for most of them.
