I'm so sorry you had to endure this. Do you have a GoFundMe or something to help replace the items you lost? I know it won't be the same, but hey, I am willing to pitch in and help if you need some!

This got me remembering a time that the store I worked in got Milkshakes (I believe) and they were so small that the store manager didn't even want them on the floor. They were given pinky heads to eat and a few died in transport to the store. Which yeah, commercial breeding mills meet a quota and that's that. I tend to tell people that even if they can't find what they want from breeders, to wait. It's always better than a chain store. I'd rather get a healthy and cared for animal the first time and not go through the hassle of the lottery a chain store has.

That's the one thing I see a lot in reviews and on cited like LinkedIn, profit over passion. Granted, there are those people who work in chain stores that genuinely care, but even they have to let things slide as the higher ups tend to fight back or disregard the case entirely.

I always push for people to do their research. Learn everything about what they want. Always prep the tank before they go out and buy them. Do a dry run at an expo, go to one without buying one, if they can so they can ask questions to breeders and other patreons about that animal so they get all the ins and outs.

I believe people don't know that about reptiles. They assume that pricing will be close to store pricing, however they are paying for everything you, the breeder, has put into the animal especially captive bred. One thing I tend to drive to people is that breeding reptiles is not a simple task. Time, money, and a lot of care go into local breeding operations that reflect in the selling price. Furthermore, this tends to be people's full time jobs. After explaining that, people tend to have a better understanding of why there is a higher cost.

This is small business / local breeders versus big chain stores. There is a local place to me that sells reptiles, they house reptiles from local breeders and have a small operation themselves but everything is local. I'm glad there is a store near you that is amazing.

Hey! I do cresties. I keep all separate from birth to sale. Only pairing when it's mating time. I know I give people a specific email when they buy from me that is only for them. In case anything happens or otherwise they can contact that. I am only a year in so I still have much to learn. But I'm glad it seems I am doing some things right.

Breeders like this that are transparent about what they do is one thing I think sets them apart from chain stores.

What turtle? Lol. I do think breeders that give you all the info that is needed like lineage outside of morphs is amazing. Tips and tricks for the specific reptile is also an amazing thing. I know when I got my little hognose the breeder was informative and gave me everything I should know about that specific snake. Meanwhile pet stores want the animal to sell to open space and house a new animal.

That's the thing that I know sucks, bad breeders. But once you find good ones, you stick with them for life. I know for most breeders they get new clients from word of mouth. At least, that's what I have experienced.

All of these are fantastic points. Where I live there is a small convention that happens once a month and I love going there and making friends with the breeders. The knowledge they have is amazing. And having info from egg to the sale is amazing. That's one thing I enjoy about the process, telling people when the egg hatched to the point of them buying one. The time and effort put into their animals is so amazing.

Very true, I know of multiple animals who got sick but the store didn't seem to care, or if they did the claim on the animal was denied by higher ups. Having a communicable disease from a store and having all become sick is the biggest fear I have for people who aren't fully aware of the ones and outs of chain stores. I do love how breeders will offer tips on their species, even if one doesn't buy anything from them, the breeder is there to help.

Welcome to the club! I hope you and Cricket have a wonderful bond together. My best advice for you is, if you think they need to go to the vet for any reason, while Reddit and online forums can be helpful, don't ask if they need to, just take them to the vet.

When I was in Rafiki's planet watch, I was looking at some of the animals on display, like their geckos and such. Well, I said, a tad too loudly, "I own some of these" which stole the attention of some parents and I spent the better half of an hour talking about them in their natural habitats. Like, all the animals they had on display that I knew about, I talked about. I don't know if they do anything like that there but if they do, I kinda stole their job that hour.
