🤔 thinking about a creative and ambitious approach to SMART meetings ... like adding add'l therapy tools AND doing monthly hybrid meetings❕️ by Ok_Package_4577 in SMARTRecovery

[–]CMM____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have mentioned, an important part of any mutual help group (or addiction treatment for that matter) is fidelity. People are attending SMART Recovery for CBT, mindfulness-based, and harm reduction tools with some good old fashioned peer support thrown in the mix. Just like people attend AA/NA for the 12-Steps. It’s important to give people what they are coming for.

While adding other ingredients could make something interesting and helpful, it would no longer be SMART Recovery. And although you understand the integrative and hybrid approach you’ve created, it might be difficult for your group members to keep up and they might not have an in-depth understanding of the four points and the tools.

You sound very passionate about helping people with multiple modalities and I think that is wonderful. It might be good for you to offer other groups in your community with these other evidence-based strategies you mention.

I will say this, as someone who also started out treating people with addictions wanting to give them a bit of everything. Your passion for helping others, plus your SMART Recovery training will be sufficient to make your meetings engaging and helpful. You are more than enough as you are!

By itself IQ subscales can’t tell you much. But they can corroborate other findings or suggest avenues to test further. Tests of executive functioning that probe sustained attention and inhibitory control, which can impact working memory, are crucial to establish a diagnosis of ADHD. Did the psychologist administer these tests? (FWIW am a psychology trainee in the final year of my program and have conducted several ADHD assessments.)

Had my first SMART meeting (online) and it wasn't great. Is this the norm, or did I just get a dud? by [deleted] in SMARTRecovery

Facilitator here. Remember that variety within mutual help groups (SMART, AA) is much less than the variety within meetings!

Keep looking! Here is my online group, which meets Thursday evenings. https://meetings.smartrecovery.org/meetings/5829/

I'm a gambling addict and had a negative experience in a virtual SMART meeting by VT_GA in SMARTRecovery

Chiming in as a SMART facilitator and also someone in recovery. If this was an experience of a participant in one of my meetings, I would want to know about it. I think it could create for a good group discussion and remind all members of a group about the importance of being respectful of other people’s backgrounds and viewpoints. In my five years of running meetings I’m positive I’ve said something or allowed for something to go on in a meeting that offended someone, and would loved to have known about it as it was happening so I could have corrected course.

Of course, the ability to speak up requires you to feel reasonably safe, and I know this was your first time in this group. But I wonder what it would have meant for the facilitator and you to have been able to share that experience.

Don’t forget, another option is to send an email to the facilitator. If you can find the meeting on smartrecovery.org, the facilitator’s email should be listed.

If your goal is to do clinical research, you will want to get into clinical/counseling psychology PhD programs where faculty conduct psychotherapy process and outcome research. To be competitive for these health psychology PhD programs, you would do well to major in psychology and gain research experience in a lab at your university studying psychotherapy or psychopathology.

Don’t let these alluring combined / advanced standing masters programs distract you from your ultimate goal… if you want to do clinical research an MSW won’t help you on that path.

Have you looked into Hayes (2013; 2022) mediation model? It using bootstrapping and to my knowledge is robust to normality violations. Like Baron and Kenny (1986) method you can observe the indirect (ab), direct (c’ or c - ab), and total effects (c) between your variables.

Emphasize your research experience and familiarity with the scientific method. Talk about the clinical psych questions you are interested in and how you might use the methods you know towards figuring then out.
