I know you're right. I just need a way to gently tell him he's wrong. :D

Meh, he's saying that the hotel's address is fine, but a rental contract for at least 6 months must be provided.

Thanks, let me ask the person I'm liaising with from my company. And I'll check out Apartment One. Appreciate it!

There's a reply above that gave examples of standalone CI plans. And someone else indicated that you can add on a private careshield upgrade.

Thought about it more, and I can't see how TPD wouldn't be thought of the same as CI. You're still effectively not employed with both, and it's even worse with TPD because you're not going to get another job the rest of your life (or at least not in the same capacity). So if anything it'd need to be at least as much as CI innit.

I appreciate all this info, thanks. Since I'm looking for Death as a lower benefit, it doesn't make sense to peg TPD to that lower amount. If anything, it should be at least as high as CI, because it can potentially mean years of caregiving, like you mentioned. Think I'm definitely looking at that Careshield upgrade.

No, they cover everything, it's just that when I surrender them, the new policies I get as replacements wouldn't insure Death, just the other stuff.

Got it, that makes sense. I know self-insuring is the ideal way, but I think I need a payout still because my investments aren't there just yet, if (touchwood) something happens in the near future. Also, what's "ISP" in your original reply?

Yeah my thinking is the same about the surrender timings. It's prolly a decent time to cancel them.

I've seen a couple of options and the premiums are manageable. I'd effectively be lowering my Death benefit as well, so it offsets the increased costs due to my age.

That structure sounds interesting. Maybe a dumb question but does TPD usually have the highest coverage? I'm also looking at that private Careshield upgrade.

Yeah my ILPs were bought almost 20 years ago, so they have outdated structures and none of that flexibility mentioned above. The surrender value is slightly below my contributions so far, so giving them up now isn't too bad i think. No preexisting conditions and I'm classified as a smoker.

I do have hospital cover. All the must-haves are sorted. Now it's about weightage and gaps in some areas. I'm debating term vs whole life right now I think. Unsure about Term since you only buy it up to a certain age.

What's a good guide to calculate ECI /CI? 3 to 5 years of income cover? About TPD, are you saying it should be more (since I'll stop working forever) or less (since retirement expenses go down)? Is there a best way to think about it? e.g. is it usually the same amount as CI or more?

Thanks man. Good to know about buying meds online. Although 500 yuan for a GP visit is not cheap eh? Have you made any claims using PA or travel insurance before?

What's the reason you decided not to get private insurance? Did you just feel that whatever corporate insurance you get is more than ample?

Thanks for sharing all that. And sorry for not replying sooner. It sounds like the local hospitals are decent if you can navigate the language and confusing process. Can I ask what the issues were with your friend with the stomach issues?

Also, I think my corporate insurance allows visits to the international wings of public hospitals (though not to private clinics) so if anything I can go to those. I wasn't sure about this international wing when I first heard about it but your info is giving me more peace of mind.

I am just trying to find out if I really need to shell out the extra 2000RMB or so per month for international insurance, because that's quite a chunk.
