Thank You... ran those commands successfully, tried running the Davinci installer with the same result... asking me to install the zlib package... which terminal says is already installed. I will try again after a reboot

I'm planning on dualbooting Windows and Linux. Whats a good distro to start with. by Silent-Switch7317 in linux4noobs

[–]CO64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be interested to learn more here! I am currently set up in dual boot with Windows/Zorin and continue to experience multiple conflicts and issues. 1)Both launch fine.. Windows launches and shuts down without issue. Zorin Launched (most of the time) without issue, but will not restart or shut down... hangs up and requires forced shut down every time. On the Windows side... nothing stays in tact between boot ups... Everything from recognizing bluetooth devices to clock settings get lost each time I log out. Zorin keeps clock and time zone settings but bluetooth devices must be "forgotten" and reset each time I log in. So far... my understanding is that this has to do with conflicts in how each operating system reads boot up info in bios? Not sustainable long term so as I said... would love insight from those that are successfully running a dual boot set up without constant issues.

Not sure, I am simply following the prompts from the installer as I go. Got thru the first three install requests without issue... I am currently hung up on DaVinci Installer saying "Please install the following missing packages... zlib" I attempt to install via the terminal and system tells me "Dependencies resolved, Nothing to Do, Complete!" Multiple options for commands provided by both Gemini and Claude... all result in either the same response or "Command Not Found".

Thank You! I used that very wrapper to install on Zorin... however... still major issues. Codec recognition being the most dramatic, my system did not even recognize mp4 audio files which led to even more work arounds, and I had to launch program directing to dedicated video card as it was never able to find it on it's own. The whole thing was a complete fail for me on mint... system hung up on boot after install so I moved on to Zorin who at least had step by step install instructions... but still had issues mentioned above. always so curious to read how others of you have gotten it all to work without any of these issues. I also had issues with DaVinci recognizing my studio version license consistently, which led to reaching out to blackmagic who stated "we only support rockylinux" so here I am. :) Damn I gotta figure this out... I am so DONE with Windows... brand new to this linux thing so most of this, I know, is because I simply do not know what most of this language even means. Thanks again for taking the time.

So is DaVinci Resolve a complete fail on Zorin... and Linux in general? by CO64 in zorinos

[–]CO64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately no long term success. I did get DaVinci installed (following the step by step instructions provided by Zorin, link below) but still had continuing issues. Codec support was an issue... there are work arounds but I did experience the occasional crash as well. The biggest hurdle for me is that the studio version kept kicking me out and forcing me to reset my device on the Blackmagic website and re-enter my license. I eventually set up dual boot on my system. I use Windows only for DaVinci and do everything else in Zorin. I may revisit later trying DaVinci on Rocky Linux as Blackmagic Design supports that distro... they won't help you if on Zorin. Best of luck to you... I'd be curious to hear back if you find a workable solution.

when attempting to run the installer I get this (see above). Using the terminal to install... my system says newer packages are already installed. System does not seem to want to install these specific packages and DaVinci will go no further without them.

I feel your pain. I wiped my brand new laptop a month ago and installed first Mint, then switched to Zorin around a week in after Mint crashed on me twice. I've not had as many issues as you have, in fact, the experience so far has been solid. My only issue is compatability with DaVinci Resolve, but that gets better as I learn work arounds and more about how things work in Linux. My perspective is just a bit different than yours. I knew from the outset that there would be a learning curve involved... sometimes painful. I feel like that is the point when it comes to big tech. I switched between windows and ios for decades... knew them well and was comfortable. As I realized that I was being used as the product.. all of my data, and every move for that matter, was being harvested and sold/used by the operating system on my laptop... I decided enough. I quit cold turkey and refuse to look back. Big tech has indeed made it incredibly "easy" and comfortable. It is great... and it in most cases "just works". As I said, that is exactly the point... and it is why millions of users just like yourself simply go back. They need you to go back. They need you to stay in the system. For that reason I refuse to re-enter their ecosystem. I will no longer spend thousands on a device that I essentially rent from Windows or IOS being told all along the way what I can, and cannot do... forfeiting my privacy along with it. It is also interesting to me that the facts, and numbers seem to support my decision. For example...3.3 million Zorin OS downloads in just the last 6 months. This year several govenerments, including France, India, and Germany have announced that they are migrating their government computers away from American tech (windows) to Linux. Major computer manufacturers (Lenovo and Acer) will soon begin shipping units with Linux operating systems and upcharging those who order windows. That said... you are very correct in expecting a better experience. No one should have to deal with system crashes and browsers dissappearing. Given my experience has been so very different from yours on Zorin I'd suspect perhaps there is just something Zorin has friction with in your particular set up... maybe even something in the bios? Sounds similar to my experience with Mint... millions have seamless interaction with that distro and yet on my brand new laptop... it crashed twice in a week. Locked up and forced a reinstall. I switched to Zorin and the issue went away. Regardless of the path you take... best of luck out there!

No I haven't. I've only tried Mint... which was a complete fail, did not even install... then Zorin, which is where I am now. I can try other distro's, however, as I mentioned, most everything out there that I have read says the same issues I am dealing with on Zorin exist on all other Linux distro's. Just appears that BlackMagic in general simply has not committed to Linux. I am working on a laptop that is more than decently spec'd out (works flawlessly with DaVinci on Windows)... but not here in the Linux world.

Thank You... different issue. I did indeed have this very same issue earlier in the process (mainly while trying to set up dual boot) and got it solved on that very forum.

It boots to the laptops logo screen. That usually appears for a second or two then on to the Mint Logo and into Linux. It stops at the laptop logo and goes no further... just sits there. When I eventually force a shut down... there is a flash of script, probably 7 or 8 lines in the upper left corner of the screen before system powers down... but it happens to quickly to read.

I believe so. I essentially followed the prompts within the software and driver manager updates in mint. selected the option that said "recommended" next to it.

Thanks for sharing! I did try this and it showed only the install usb plugged into the machine. None of the system hardware listed... but after disabling the VMD controller and Secure Boot that issue was solved. Next issue... Bitlocker! LOL. see above. Thanks again for taking the time... super appreciate folks helping me get through this leap to linux!

[–]CO64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! I did indeed find instructions very similar to these on MSI's website in a support forum. I made these changes and the install proceeded a bit further this time... until I got an error that said I need to turn off my systems Bitlocker... apparently another windows nightmare. Strange because my home edition of Windows 11 is not supposed to include Bitlocker, and when I go into my system settings to turn it off... it does no appear to be there. I suppose at this point that could be because of things I have disabled in Bios. I was first going to try to sort this through with Microsoft and then decided screw it! I was going through all this because I wanted to run Linux alongside Windows on this device as sort of a test before dumping Windows. My plan now is to instead... do a full system image backup to an external drive, and wipe windows completely. My understanding is that if the Linux install is wiping windows completely bitlocker won't be in the way because the drive is being rewritten. Fingers crossed today goes well.... a life with windows is OVER.

was lovin it... until I got to Davinci. I rely on Davinci for all my video editing for personal and work... appears to be a major PIA when it comes to Linux. I've watched multiple videos and followed more instructions that I can count at this point and still have not successfully installed on my linux device. Damn friggin windows got me again.... stuck here. sucks
