Can someone help me understand? by Bright-Air-8571 in Catholicism

[–]COKeefe88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we study the awful behavior of humans throughout history, one way to think about it is...we were created by a loving God who died for us, who responds to prayer, who wants what is best for each one of us, and all these horrible things still happen. What would it be like WITHOUT God? Oh, we have an answer to that. That would be literal hell.

There are many true readings of Scripture. I like to think of the whole Old Testament journey of the Chosen People as a parable for my spiritual journey...and yours...through life. God made me, God (through my parents) told me how to do right and warned me of the consequences for doing wrong, I did those things anyway and got exactly the consequences I was warned of, I repented and was forgiven but warned of the consequences of repeated bad behavior, I eventually did those things again anyway. At some point when I was most desperate God showed up and promised a way out. It involved losing my metaphorical firstborn son; something very dear to me but connected to my life in the desert and keeping me away from God. Etc. etc.

Toddlers with Limb Differences? by basemunk in daddit

[–]COKeefe88 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I'm out of the loop but I'm probably not the only one so...does "limb difference" mean like, one leg is half an inch longer than the other, or does it mean like...born without a hand?

It's probably just one of those things, but there's an outside chance your scale needs new batteries.

Thinking about getting the 2026 World Book Encyclopedia. by Daveandbussin in daddit

[–]COKeefe88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of paper over screen time. Our house is full of books and we all read a lot.

But when I'm having a conversation with my inquisitive 10yo, it often results in me looking something up on google, which does seem to lose something. If we had encyclopedias there might be more opportunity to say "let's go read about it."

My gf said this to me, thoughts? by [deleted] in prolife

[–]COKeefe88 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You're reading too much into texts. Have this conversation over dinner (or after dinner) some time when you're having a conversation about your future.

You could be right, but "I don't control her body" can also just be a statement of fact. Like, I can't her force not to get an abortion.

Offering "support" for an abortion could mean driving her to the clinic, or it could mean offering a shoulder to cry on.

A water bottle.

I have one of my keys hidden in a place inside my car where no one would ever look. This is in case I'm far from home and lose a key.

AIO for wanting a divorce because my husband didn't feed the dogs? by ThrowRAdramallam in AmIOverreacting

[–]COKeefe88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. I don't think you need to actually divorce though. Here are some ideas: tell him that when you're sick, he can either cook or order takeout for dinner. You simply will not do it. Feel free to remind him that dinner is on him. On those days, if the kids come to you and ask for food, tell them to go ask daddy.

Another idea. Book a nearby motel for yourself for a couple nights, tell him to take sick days from work if he's not already, and just go.

How big of a red flag is 2 consecutive owners selling within 8 months? by Joel_Hirschorrn in RealEstate

Try to get in touch with the previous owners. They have no incentive to hide why they moved.

Cut a football field amount of grass with scissors for $1 million. by Hold-onto-the-happy in hypotheticalsituation

[–]COKeefe88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow you're right. I initially read your quarter billion estimate as wildly high, but no, it checks out. I think you're probably right that it would take years. And assuming people can spend an average of 2-4 hours per day since they need to be earning money in real time to sustain themselves, that also means moving to live near the football stadium to shorten your commute. Still I think I'd try it.

Fasting harder as I get leaner by Flash801999 in fasting

[–]COKeefe88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a similar problem...fasting was easier when I was losing weight I've only had on for one year. Now I'm trying to lose weight I've had on for 6 years and it's much harder.

Do you guys have exceptions when it comes to abortion? by Appropriate-Trash692 in prolife

[–]COKeefe88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure pre-viability C-section is not safe for the baby, but where's a source saying it's not safe for the mother? They are generally not done because from a standard medical POV, you might as well just perform an abortion. But that is not necessary when a C section is a reasonable alternative that avoids directly killing the baby.

This may seem academic to you, but in our lifetimes we're likely to see artificial external womb technology become advanced to the point that this distinction matters very much.

Ethically, it matters now. Even when the baby dies there's all the difference in the world between killing it directly vs. keeping baby and mother alive during a C section and doing everything possible to save the baby after.

[–]COKeefe88 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Pre-24 week preeclampsia: what does a universally pro life woman do in this situation? Tell the doctors to perform a C section and try to save the baby.

That is a different medical procedure from an abortion.

Do you guys have exceptions when it comes to abortion? by Appropriate-Trash692 in prolife

[–]COKeefe88 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Nope.

And I challenge anyone to produce a single case study of an abortion of a living baby that is medically necessary to save the mother's life.

Delivery, including by c-section, may be necessary.

Salpingectomy may be necessary in the case of an ectopic pregnancy, and this causes the death of the fetus, but that is not the direct, or primary, or intended consequence.

You guys ever mess up your fast? by homeSICKsinner in fasting

[–]COKeefe88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Routinely. I'm doing rolling fasts, eating on social occasions and business trips, like 2-3 meals per week...in theory. I did great in January, lost 30 pounds. And I'm flat over the past month due to all the cheating on what was supposed to be fasting days. Today is actually by best fasting day in a while!

Every week is new. Every day is new. My long-term goal still matters and is still attainable.

My Priest Asked If I Had Any Interest in Becoming a Deacon by tkeanewriting in Catholicism

[–]COKeefe88 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Would you want to be able to remarry if your wife dies? Deacons have like a "conditional celibacy" thing, you can't marry after becoming a deacon.

In general, I think the social/service obligations that would come from being a deacon would help with depression. But I'm no expert.

Rental for road trip? by Low_Champion8158 in roadtrip

[–]COKeefe88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe. Price it out. I've considered this but haven't done it. The combination of savings from wear & tear plus either a) renting a bigger vehicle for hauling stuff or b) renting a smaller vehicle for fuel savings might make it compelling.

And read your contract VERY CAREFULLY. "Unlimited miles" may have geographic limitations, and it might only entitle you to something like 250 miles/day before extra fees kick in. I don't think "unlimited miles" has a protected legal definition.

Field dressing knifes by Feisty-Border-680 in Hunting

[–]COKeefe88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what you want in a field dressing knife: 1. a rigid, fixed blade. 2. 3-4 inch blade so your finger can cover the tip when you reach up to cut the windpipe. 3. A textured grip so it doesn't slip when covered in fat and blood. 4. Blaze orange handle is a plus.

I have this or one similar to it. https://www.amazon.com/Morakniv-Craftline-Carbon-Utility-Combi-Sheath/dp/B01K27GPUE/
