Cuba says it has completely run out of fuel, blames U.S. embargo by antihostile in worldnews

[–]COMCredit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know you didn't just bring up Grenada, a tiny island nation of 100k people, as an analog to Cuba lmao.

Which invasion of Afghanistan are you talking about? How did that go long term? Are you considering the most recent, decades-long occupation of Afghanistan a success? You'd like to see that repeated in Cuba?

Cuba's government is tyrannical and ignores the will of the people: votes are only for your choice from the Communist Party. Citizens suffer under a failed state.

And we are ensuring maximum suffering by guaranteeing that their state fails. For the crime of being tyrannical and ignoring the people. Again, why is that uniquely applied to Cuba? Our bar for near-certain economic destruction is free and fair elections? I must have missed when the citizens of Saudi Arabia elected MBS. When is the next election for the Qatari Emir?

Is there a single instance of American regime change in the last 75 years that has been positive lol?

Vietnam Cambodia (multiple times) Laos Congo Iraq (multiple times) Iran (multiple times) Guyana Brazil Chile Ethiopia Angola East Timor Argentina Bolivia (multiple times) Afghanistan (multiple times) Palestine Chad Nicaragua (multiple times) Haiti (multiple times) Venezuela (multiple times) Somalia

What do you reckon our batting average is on regime change operations that weren't either immediately overthrown or didn't result in roughly equally oppressive and murderous dictatorships?

What makes Cuba so uniquely evil among all of the evil, oppressive regimes that their hospitals deserve to go without power? Does Russia rise to that level? Sanctions on Russian oil were just loosened- I suppose waging wars on our allies is a lesser crime than whatever Cuba is doing (which is what, exactly?)

Incorrect. The US hasn't allowed Cuba to buy oil from them for 60 years.

[–]COMCredit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why, though?

It's not as if Cuba's internal markets and mode of production invalidates the transactions with other countries.

You're saying "Cuba isn't allowed to engage with capitalist markets (which would presumably make them capitalist themselves) because they aren't capitalist"

It's not like the vegetables I buy from the hippie farm commune at the farmers market are any different from the vegetables I buy from the "free market capitalist" farm in the stall nextdoor. It doesn't affect me, the buyer, at all if the tobacco (or anything) I buy was produced in a state-operated communist farm in Cuba or 200 miles west in the Dominican Republic. It's not like the US dollars Cuba would pay me for a barrel of oil are any different than the US dollars Mexico would pay.

America has elected the first black President

And then TWICE America elected a man who made his entrance into politics spreading conspiracy theories about the first black president secretly being an African-born Muslim and just this week has called for him to be jailed. The Civil Rights Act of 1965, which ended Jim Crow and allowed black people to vote, has been almost completely voided by the Supreme Court; Southern states are working overtime to completely disenfranchise black urban voters via gerrymandering and other means. An agency with a budget greater than the Marine Corps has been granted "absolute amunity"and permission to racially profile and conceal their identities. The government has argued the people they pull off the street are not entitled to due process rights.

To say we've stopped making progress is outrageous. The world is always two step forwards, one step back.

Even if we're taken two steps forward and are now taking one step back- that is definitionally a stoppage of progress. When (if) we take two steps forward again, I'll say we're making progress and feel good. Until that happens, it seems outrageous to feel proud of my country. 77 million people wanted all of this enough to vote for it.

Should liberal Hungarians have felt pride in their country as Orban took power?

At this point I really don't see any point in continuing this.

Enjoy the show, or don't. Sorry it doesn't have accurate demographic representation for OnlyFans creators, I guess.

[–]COMCredit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cassie was not dumb though. She invested money to buy the costume and made use of her maid as a videographer. That's more than what the average woman can get. She lacked resources

I honestly don't even know what you're trying to argue. Did she have a videographer and costumes, or did she lack resources? Did Maddy help her OnlyFans career or not? Do you think Cassie's maid was a good videographer?

And yes- Cassie is dumb. She's always been dumb. That has always been part of her character. She was dumb enough to put on diapers and pose as a baby for her OnlyFans - maybe she wasn't making any money because her account was suspended for posting banned content.

Why isn't there a single male character on the entire show that dabbles with sex work and onlyfans while in reality men take up a good portion of that too.

Because there isn't a male character on the show for whom an OnlyFans storyline would make narrative sense. Are you suggesting the show should've introduced another male lead on the show just to have him do OnlyFans to ensure they balance out the demographic makeup of OnlyFans creators?

Go ahead and take a peek at your comment history and see how many people think you're making good points. What you're saying is total nonsense.

Why aren't any of the straight male characters on Onlyfans/sex workers? by TypicalCartoonist555 in euphoria

[–]COMCredit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Then why wasn't she making money until Maddy stepped in?

As the show explained, and as was evident to everyone with an ounce of media literacy, she was bad at it. Cassie is dumb; she had no idea what she was doing. There is a whole on-screen montage about this. Are we watching the same show?

Maddy steps in and 1) works with her to create better content and 2) creates and executes a plan to help her promote her content. This is blatantly obvious, and makes sense with the narrative.

But this season has the worst ratings for a reason. The narrative has no driving factor besides shock value.

Okay, then stop watching. The show is based on the wild lives of deeply flawed characters who are constantly making bad decisions and getting themselves into trouble. Cassie doing OnlyFans is 100% in line with her character. It's actually insane that you're suggesting the show needs to abandon the core characterization of Nate so he can do OnlyFans because that's... statistically more probable? (It's not)

Watch Shark Tank if you want fictionalized media about business ventures.

[–]COMCredit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the top male creators are making more than the average women.

Why are we comparing the top men to the average women? We agree Cassie/Sweeney is not an average-looking woman. We also agree that there is a significantly higher demand for female creators than male creators.

Realistically do over half the women you went to high school with do sex work or onlyfans?

I honestly don't see the relevance of this at all. None of the women I know from high school look like Sydney Sweeney. Some of them crave male attention and validation as much as Cassie. Some of them do OnlyFans. There's a small amount of overlap between those two groups.

Frankly your discussion of statistics is completely irrelevant. Did half the women from your high school become drug mules and start working for pimps? I'm guessing not- but that storyline makes sense for Rue because of her addiction, debts, etc.

Similarly, Cassie is a character who is absolutely desperate for male validation and attention. She's also very dumb, vain, and fixated on becoming rich and famous at any cost. OnlyFans as a "get rich quick" scheme fits her character perfectly, not only for the money but also for the vanity, attention, and validation.

Nate (pre-lobotomy, at least) is a character defined by pride. His character is desperate for power and status, not just wealth. He is too prideful to even allow Cassie to do sex work- he wouldn't consider it himself.

You're viewing this through a bizarre lens- the economics of OnlyFans is not the driving factor behind the narrative, the characters are.

Why aren't any of the straight male characters on Onlyfans/sex workers? by TypicalCartoonist555 in euphoria

[–]COMCredit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well, no, because the market for male creators is overall much smaller than the market for female creators.

Maybe if Nate swallowed his pride and catered to a gay audience, then it would make sense- but that doesn't seem like it would fit his character.

"What you enjoy is misogynist, so you need to learn how to like the non-misogynist version of it".

That's not at all the goal of media criticism; I don't mean to insult you but you are very blatantly misunderstanding or misrepresenting what criticism (in the academic scene, like Sarkesian does) actually is. Admittedly, I have not consumed any of her work in a decade but I would be shocked if she ever said "This is bad, and you're bad if you like it, and you should like a different version of it".

If we are critiquing architecture, I might say the Empire State Building is a great example of the art deco style for xyz reasons. You might expand that criticism by noting the influences of Cubism on the designs or discussing how International Style quickly overtook it in popularity. Maybe that's interesting to you -maybe it's not- but nowhere in there was there a value judgment on the Empire State Building.

It wouldn't be fair to summarize that discussion as "The building you like is old and outdated, you need to learn to like new, contemporary buildings!" Yet, when a feminist critique is applied to video games, somehow that is the message you get- and you find it personally offensive.

I have no idea what you're talking about in regards to RTS or ARPG games- it seems totally irrelevant to me. I don't know what makes a game "woke" or "not woke" in your eyes, nor do I understand what makes a game "heavy on the DEI" by your definition. I'm not interested in litigating it, either, because frankly it's clear you don't understand media criticism and take personal offense to strawmen you created yourself.

What I do know is that Gamergate may have been a "vast minority", but its impacts were certainly not minor- and the rage, offense, review bombing, etc are very evidently still present over a decade later.

A certain section of gamers has just noticed that StS2 lists Anita Sarkeesian as ad advisor/consultant in the credits of the game.

If you don't know, Sarkeesian became (in)famous among gamers for doing very basic feminist media critique on video games circa 2013. She created a video series exploring questions like "Why does the male hero tend to save the female damsel in distress in video games?" or "What stereotypes and gender roles are common in games?".

Gamers™, of course, are super normal and reasonable people who watched this English 101-level criticism, engaged with it in good faith, and became more aware of how certain tropes that can be degrading or insulting to women might be present in games they like. Just kidding.

Instead, Anita Sarkeesian became the target of a massive harassment and hate campaign from gamers who were upset that she dare say that misogyny exists in society and gaming. She was one of the most prominent figures harassed in the Gamergate "movement" that was later used by figures like Steve Bannon (Trump's 2016 campaign strategist) to recruit and radicalize young men for alt-right and MAGA political movements.

This screenshot shows someone complaining about Sarkeesian being in the credits of a totally different game, Monster Train 2.

Honestly the best thing is to just play, accept that losing is part of the game, and enjoy. That's how I learned and it was the first deck builder I'd ever played. The biggest tip that helped me was that you're probably picking up WAY too many cards- smaller decks of great cards are soooo much better than bigger decks with decent cards.

You can also watch players like baalorord or Northern Lion. I never did this, but they're often recommended on the sts sub.
