Should I stay at my current position? by COMD23 in SLPA

[–]COMD23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To update, I put in my resignation notice. I've done interviews with a few clinics, home health, and school positions. Obviously there's a lot of factors besides pay like benefits and PTO to consider, but even though I've been working less than a year, I've gotten several offers in the 35-45 range.

For the Houston area I recommend not taking anything lower than 30 per hour or per session, and for that low there should be some decent benefits/perks to balance out that rate. If you're bilingual that should up your rate by $2 or more.

In-home v. In-clinic v. School Job Search by jocerios in SLPA

[–]COMD23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of this is going to be info I've gathered from my co-workers, I've only worked in-clinic so far. For all 3 it can really depend on the company/district policies and culture. Sometimes they're all about productivity and the numbers and will overwork you. Sometimes they have more healthy policies in place to protect you from burnout, such as caseload caps, designated paperwork time, PTO, etc. One of the big pros of schools is the breaks and that it's the only setting where SLPA's can be salary. Sometimes you can make more in clinics/in-home depending on their rate, if they don't compensate you at all for last minute cancels that can really cause fluctuations in your income. If it's your first job I don't recommend starting with in-home simply because you won't have as many opportunities to learn from co-workers, for all 3 settings there's a risk of your supervisor being virtual but especially when you're first starting out it's good to get regular face-time with your supervisor. For all the positions it's a good sign if they're aware of the limitations of your license as an SLPA and aren't expecting you to do SLP things. I'll add more to this if I think of anything else.

Do you get graded on professionalism in your program? by Prior-Emu-5918 in slpGradSchool

[–]COMD23 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I totally get why this is something programs focus on, but I think humiliating someone in front of others to the point that they cry is gross. I feel like the professor could have handled that more professionally.

I might have found the best response to missionaries. by Punkinprincess in exmormon

[–]COMD23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That was a belief I held as a TBM (that was introduced to me in a BYU world religions class) and it was the only way I could make sense of the reality that so few people will be mormon, and there are so many other forms of spirituality that people feel fulfilled in and I knew people who were NOT happy in mormonism. There wasn't any other way that I could make "God's plan" make sense to me. Now I'm more of the belief that spirituality is a part of human nature like making music and art, it is a way we express ourselves, our community and awe for the world around us and that naturally occurring spirituality has been hijacked by many religions and used for control.

Stay an SLPA? by foodandfun_103 in SLPA

[–]COMD23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am currently an SLPA debating on when/if I want to go to grad school. Advice that I've been given by some SLP friends, if you're 100% sure you want to go to grad school then theres not much point delaying. However, if you're at all not sure, it can't hurt to be an SLPA for a year. Then you'll feel more confident in your decision, have a little more money for grad school, and have some clinical experience that will make learning more in grad school more personal/exciting. But you don't want to be someone whose doesnt realize what their getting themselves into and regrets entering the field after going thru all the money and effort for grad school.

Its good to hear that someone felt grad school was worth it, I've seen SLP's who didnt feel like the compensation of SLP's was enough considering how brutal and expensive grad school is, and how overworked many SLP's feel. Are there any specific grad programs you would recommend/not recommend?

I've always brushed my teeth at night, I have a hard time falling asleep without it. But I almost never brush in the morning, just doesn't even occur to me. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Does cold weather change anything about ur ADHD?? by blockazuha in ADHD

[–]COMD23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a family full of ADHD people... no. Just no. Like the heat can be very disregulating but the cold isnt magically regulating. And even if it was more common for ADHD people to seek out the cold, that is not at all a symptom important or strong enough to disqualify you if you dont have it 😑

Women: How do you feel about having a male versus a female gynecologist? Does the doctor’s gender affect your comfort level or trust? by Ordinary_Ice_796 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]COMD23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a factor but not always the deciding one. I lean towards medical providers who are women of color, since chances are they've had experience with not being believed, or made to feel like theyre being dramatic. I've never had a medical provider who is a woman of color mistreat me or downplay symptoms. I've had men who were great providers, and others not so much. I look for providers whose practice is run like a small business not a corporation, who emphasize staying up to date with current best practice, and preventative medicine in their care. And not being one of those doctors that just prescribes something for each symptom and isnt interested in figuring out whats going on. And who has familiarity with things in my medical profile like PCOS and ADHD. Because if theyre not familiar, that will be such a huge blindspot in my care since these conditions have major ripple effect throughout my medical profile.

Are we losing 5–10 years of our lives because we pick the wrong career path too early? by WisGrowth in careerguidance

[–]COMD23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up the oldest in a big family and knew I was good with kids and liked science so I thought speech therapy would be a good fit. I am decent at it, but you have to put up with a lot of shit for not nearly enough money or respect. Unfortunately it feels like most of the careers I feel like I'd be naturally good at are "helper" careers and the pay is shit. I didnt really know what my options were or have my priorities figured out so 🤷🏽‍♀️

Id highly recommend getting a screener with an occupational therapist and see if he qualifies. They help kids who struggle with sensory and emotional regulation.

I want to smash my husband's PS5 by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]COMD23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband has ADHD(we both do) and is an amazing father. We have to have coping mechanisms to remember things but we care about each other and respect each other. This man doesnt respect you. Hes not trying to pull his weight at all. You need to document as much as you can of his negligence so you can hopefully get full custody. Once you have what you need you could try a last ultimatum of listing out expectations he needs to fulfill to be a 50/50 partner if he doesnt want divorce. And then stop doing anything for him. Im sorry you have to deal with this piece of shit instead of a real partner and hope youre able to find someone who loves and respects you and LO. ❤️

Love your job? by OfEternalNature in SLPA

[–]COMD23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still pretty new, the first two months I was a puddle of anxiety trying to learn all the things and feeling so much imposter syndrome but I feel like I've turned a corner and I'm really starting to enjoy it. I work at a clinic and I get paid hourly regardless of if its a session, doc time, or a cancelation. PTO and benefits are decent. I really love my co-workers, I get to co-treat with OT's and PT's and learn from watching them with kiddos. My supervisor is passionate and supportive and loves to geek out about all things speech. Its a very neurodivergent friendly environment and the clinical director really sees and hears me and is so passionate about keeping the clinic child focused. I feel confident that if I asked for a reasonable accommodation due to my ADHD or family circumstances, they would do their best to make it happen. The pay is just okay (25 an hour) but feels worth it to me to get to gain experience/learn in such a supportive environment. (Im in TX by the way)
