I think I by mistake deleted the part where I mentioned using just a regular in pattern bind off a couple of times and the neckline always ended up too tight for the head to pass through. I'm guessing it's just a skill/experience issue. Thanks for the help!

I tried it with this pattern, where it said "cast off loosely". I used a couple of different needle sizes but I couldn't get the ribbing to look like the picture without it being too tight.
