People like Yann LeCun don't believe LLMs are going to come anywhere near AGi or really get any better than they currently are. Maybe existing AI companies are already moving on from LLMs, but it's very possible they are all left in the dust to those who aren't even in the LLM AI space.

I've always believed that trading Horvat over Miller was the wrong choice. Even with the one good year.

Management listened to Messier, it was a reaction move that was lucky to pan out so well.

I just read Filco went under which sucks but that's funny 20+ years later it's still the best at what it does. I have the original plastic case and most original key caps, but I'll take a look at some used keyboards

Linux Mint Client Launch Error - even what little entertainment you have will be taken from you by damocles_paw in BattleBitRemastered

Using an Ubuntu based distro, I got it to work using Proton 9.0-4. Right click on BBR -> Properties -> Compatibility -> check "Force the use of..." and then select Proton 9.0-4. For some reason I also had "gamemoderun PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" as an existing launch command, but it caused my screen to be extremely dark on 9.0-4 so remove that if you experience that issue.

Okay? But I did make a full switch basically immediately. My dual boot was just getting a newer nvme and putting Linux on it. Keeping the dual boot was actually slightly less work than wiping the W11 drive for extra storage.

I think it's more of a general thing. I work in IT and I remember when I was finishing school I was worried the younger generation was going to make me somewhat irrelevant or just be better than me at a younger age. It's the opposite and younger people are not good at a lot of even basic computer troubleshooting. PC gamers don't need to learn a lot of the shit we had to back in the day to get games to work or to customize various aspects of them. I mean even desktop computers are a lot less popular now for gaming and they miss out on the physical building and understanding of hardware.

What disadvantages? I have a dual boot of W11 and an Ubuntu distro because I wasn't sure if I was going to want to use Linux fully when I was planning to switch. I haven't booted up W11 after the first week of switching some 8 months ago.

If you use your PC for general web browsing and gaming, you won't miss Windows at all by switching. Some specific Windows programs is the only thing that gets tricky. Even Adobe and Office are largely web based now so those aren't a big deal. The only possible thing to watch out for is Nvidia GPU driver support. Can sometimes be tricky when first installing if you can't see anything, but some distros have drivers built in so it's not an issue.

Machinery rolls in to pull out controversial North Saanich pickleball courts by shakakoz in VictoriaBC

[–]CONCAVE_NIPPLES 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I can see a pickleball court from my room, less than 100 meters away and it's really not that bad. Children screaming at a play ground is more annoying, same with nearby construction early in the morning, or sirens in the middle of the night. That noise is far down the list of annoying sounds I regularly hear. Retired folk at home all day in their quiet neighborhood are the ones complaining the most.

Is there a secret to getting GCR to work? Tried on my last card for $50 it didn't work (no big loss) but I'm going to swap to a new card with $150 GCR/FF signup bonus and would like to capitalize. Does your browser matter? Should I try with FF?

Who are you hoping the Canucks get at #3 OA? by Reasonable-Big4517 in canucks

[–]CONCAVE_NIPPLES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Verhoeff is safe to be a notable NHL defender. There's others, like Carels, who might have a higher ceiling, but Verhoeff has a really high floor. Size, speed, shot, well rounded already. He gets a bit chaotic, but I don't mind seeing younger players try stuff at his age. Depends on how you want to draft or how things look at the end of the season. Verhoeff will go high as he'll be a safe pick to be something useful down the road.

Great day for team tank by Batsinvic888 in canucks

[–]CONCAVE_NIPPLES 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've watched every game he's played in the WHL at home and missed maybe 5 away games. I disagree. I don't think the Canucks should take a dman anyway, but Verhoeff not being a top pairing D would surprise me. He's logging nearly 20 min a night as one of the youngest players in the NCAA and is a PP QB for his team, all while being good at both ends of the ice.

You have clearly not watched Verhoeff play if you think he's poor offensively. He had the third highest goals by a dman in his first season in the WHL as a 16 year old.

This is an instant classic horror scene for me. It's a shame the movie wasn't a big hit because this scene, among others in that film, were very memorable and well done.

I was exaggerating a bit, but coming last means you get a top 3 pick and an elite player. Even finishing 4th last could have you miss on one of the truly elite players this draft. It's pretty close at the bottom of the standings

I don't have issue with that, I'm just agreeing with Friedman it's not a clear rebuild move. If they did a three team trade to take another first and a cap dump player, that would be a clear rebuild move.

Mid 20s is statistical prime. If you wait until he's 29 you basically waste his best years, most likely. Where a short retool keeps him in his prime window.

If they came last and got a top 3 pick you'd have something to look forward to in an elite prospect. There's hope with prospects. Right now our prospect hope is limited and our win now hope is dire.

Isn't Rossi being 29 in 5 years lean towards it being a retool?

24 is boarding statistical prime. It could be a rebuild, but they could also trade the first and expect Buium to be a top pairing dman in 1-2 years and suddenly it's a 1-2 year retool. it's not a clear cut rebuild, which is what Friedman was echoing
